Alternator bracket mounting - not right - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have a 72 350 - the previous owner felt the stock mounting brackets and adjusting arm had to be thrown out and chrome junk should be installed - now i want it back stock , i thought i had a short waterpump but when i installed the bracket and arm the 1" of adjustment is not right - the alt hits the junk chrome valve covers so i am starting to suspect i have a long waterpump , dimentions from the block mounting is 3" to pulley and 6" from mounting to pump snout where the fan spacer starts , am i on the right track here . I would be very open to the 2 mounting styles but this isnt working .

ok from my dimesion it looks like i have the short , so what are the two bracket systems - can anyone provide a pic of both styles - the alt is bumping into the valve cover if you try and use any of the adjustment available . sorry i am not picture capable .

Heres a pic I saved from this site. It is a short pump with accessory holes in the head.

just great photos, i am using the same bracketry and the back of the alt , is hitting the valve cover , i suspected incorrect brackets first , then waterpump , i see it measures close enough to the short , alt , may be the problem , not sure yet , any ideas or help

Try a longer belt to move the alt out further?

I believe if you are running the tall style valve covers the factory setup will hit. Seems I had the same problem and had to put a dent on the top corner of the valve cover to keep the alternator from hitting. My valve covers were painted so you couldnt see it behind the alternator.

It's not the brackets are the pump the valve covers are taller than factory ones so you will need a longer belt to get the alternator further out.

It sucks not being able to hear! LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB! After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.
