Re: TF windshield install help
I think I read somewhere that you put the trim in the rubber the rubber on the window, then the rope in the seam and slide it in. Two guys makes it easier. Also one of those window suction cup things.

Re: TF windshield install help
May need lube. The rubber grabs the trim and it doesn't slide in easy. I've heard of using dish soap, I used dielectric grease because I had it.

Rubber on glass first, then put the trim in.
Use lots of soapy water, mix dish soap and water in a spray bottle Posted via Mobile Device

Re: TF windshield install help
Just chiming in, I DON'T mean to hijack. My '55 windshield is sandblasted. Whose glass does everyone recommend? Planning on Steele rubber just cause I've always heard its best. I WANT the SS trim too but I don't trust any shop used to doing modern cars and I'm kinda intimidated to try it myself!
PLEASE post a step-by-step with photos when you do this. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: TF windshield install help
This is the one I got local from Ralph Roberts, its the shipping that kills ya, its tinted at the top which is cool. Made it Mexico, so it matches my Chevy crate engine, and I get to drive it and enjoy it rather than saving up to buy a made in USA one.

Re: TF windshield install help
Hey Dan, I tried putting the ss trim in rubber again today with no luck, very aggravating, dish soap really helped but i am going to call a pro tomorrow for advice or to help me with the install, the rubber has a groove in for trim but to my amateur eye groove is at wrong side of rubber, need someone who knows to tell me what im doing wrong, i might have it right but need a installer to help me. If and when i get it right i will post what i did.Mike

Re: TF windshield install help
Hi Dan, took a while to get the glass in,Have a buddy that knows how to install glass. The front windshield with trim installed in rubber first needs to be lubed up good and tape to hold it all together. It was harder to install then i though it would be,need two people one to pull rope from inside one to keep pressure on glass from outside. Back window was a little easier, rubber on glass install glass same way i inside pulling rope one pushing from outside, after glass is installed you need a tool to put chrome in rubber, that went good,Ill put a couple pictures tomorrow,Mike.

Re: TF windshield install help
that trim can be a beotch, it has a lip on the back side that needs to click into the back of the rubber.
you really have to work on it to get it to click in all the way around. the video was a good start on how to get the rope in and use it, i would use soap not wd40. lots of soap. and get 3 guys, one inside and 2 pushing from the outside. you have to push hard to get the sides in or the rubber pops out. set the bottom first, make sure it's seated and centered and then your 2 minutes from done... once you get set up it goes fast, we had mine in and seated in 20 min the big back window was harder, definitely get the install tool to get the rubber key in. all four corners took for ever to get the key in, i think my glass was very tight in the corners. we struggled for over an hr to get the big back glass in. small back window is quick, i've done those in 10 min. most glass shops have no idea how to work with this stuff we had a 63 vette in the shop for paint, we pulled the glass out all the way around to repair hairline cracks all over. we didn't feel comfortable installing the windshield so we called the pros, they sent out their most experienced tech. long story, but we ended up installing it ourselves after repainting the front of the car from the damage he caused.

Re: TF windshield install help
Im sure there are tricks to putting glass in but i have not picked them up.My buddy was pretty good at it,lots of soapy water a good hook tool and patiance. I learned a few things about glass installing the hard way,I cut the chrome bead that went in back glass before putting glass in truck, and after installation its 1inch short, front windshield should come down a little in the corners, overall its ok and sure glad there in without breaking.here are a couple pictures.Mike

Re: TF windshield install help
Thanks Mike,
There was another guy that posted a couple photos of his '57 with a bright mettallic green...I THINK even brighter than yours. I can't remember his name but I thought it was you until I realized your truck is a '59. Yours is beautiful! |
