292 Chevy Langdon headers/Offy Intake woes
I'm putting a set of Langdon's cast headers, and an Offy aluminum 4bbl intake on my 64 Chevrolet C10 with a 292.
The flanges on them interfere with each other when trying to mount them on the head. There is no way to get both the intake, and exhaust in place. They simply get in each others way. It appears that both Langdon's headers, and Offy's intake have flanges a little larger than the stock exhaust, and intake. This may be fine when used with the stock equipment, but, it just isn't jiving when used together. Considering the coin I've got in to all of this, I'm not super impressed. So, anyone else run in to this problem? I'm really not interested in getting out the die grinder on a bunch of brand new parts. Emails have been sent to both Langdon, and Summit. I wouldn't expect to hear anything on a Sunday, so, that's why I'm here. |

That's normal. Grind them a bit to fit.
The odd shaped washers that go on the studs might need some grinding on them too to make them make flat contact. The thickness of the Offy flange is not the same as the flange on the headers. |

Re: 292 Chevy Langdon headers/Offy Intake woes
The Offenhauser intake flange measures the same size as the stock intake. It appears that the oversized flanges on the Langdon headers are what's creating the problem.
Pretty lame that I need to grind on a nearly $300 part to make it fit. Given the size of the flange, I'm not sure they'd even fit with a stock intake. |

Re: 292 Chevy Langdon headers/Offy Intake woes
You'll have to machine/grind the flanges so they clear each other when mounted to the head. Here's a photo of the 292 conversion we did in my buddy's Chevy II with the same combination as yours...

Re: 292 Chevy Langdon headers/Offy Intake woes
Well, I'll be chopping the ears off my intake tomorrow to make this fit. After measuring carefully, I'm going to put the blame on Langdon's headers. The flanges are just substantially larger than the stock manifold, or than they really need to be. He has yet to return my emails, but, at minimum, he should put this information on his website. It appears as though I am far from the first person to have this problem.
I also ordered some self-equalizing washers from McMaster-Carr to help with the flange thickness differences.... my wallets starting to get pretty thin! |
