The photo is showing GM’s version of a sliding steering column U-joint (plagued with quality problems/recalls in the intermediate shaft version). It appears yours has either broken or pulled apart. The arrow is pointing to what appears to be the cross shaft that should be riding in the side slots marked with the X’s. This disconnect could have resulted in a catastrophic failure on the road, and needs some serious investigation/repair.
