bench seat mobility...
hi all!
has anyone ever rigged up their stock bench seat to tilt forward so you can access the area by the gas tank and where the stock jack would go??? the pic below is a view from the passenger side of the bracket on the bottom corner of the bench seat. there are two screws that keep the seat immobile (so it wont tilt). was talking with andy (longhorn man) yesterday, and wanted to see if anyone has ever done this to their bench seat. he has done this by removing Screw1, but the problem is, if you remove Screw 1 from the bracket, the seat will not only tilt forward, it will also tilt backwards against the back wall. has anyone ever hooked up the seat to allow it to tilt forward, and to NOT tilt backward? what would be the damage if i allowed the seat to tilt backward? i generally sit with the seat pretty close to the back slot position anyways (even though i am only 5'5"), but i dont want to damage the paint on the inside of the cab because the seat would rub against the back wall... ideas? any comments on the function of aftermarket bench seats? how do they accomplish this feat? jewels.

hmmm - i should be more clear about this picture...
as i see it (i think).... screw 2 is the pivot screw if you remove screw 1, because screw 2 only bolts into the bottom part of the bench seat.... but screw 1 bolts from the bracket into the top part of the bench seat (which holds it immobile) ---------- i was *thinkin* about riggin up some kind of secondary bracket (even a duplicate bracket or somethin) that might prevent the seat from tilting too far back... but i wanted to see what others have done to fix the problem.... comments? suggestions? jewels.

I've got a bench seat from an early 80s truck in mine and it tilts forward.

Wouldn't ya think that there is some way to stop the seat from hitting the tank or the rear of the cab with some sort of "stopper" above the tank?

seats from 73-87 chevy trucks have a latching mechanism in the side that keep it in place. Ever thinkof pulling screw 1 out , putting a pice of rod in its place with a washer welded on one end to keep it from pulling out, then have a sping attached on the other end with a handle to pull the rod out when you need to pull the seat forward, then the rod goes back into the hole to keep the seat in place.

I think I would go with the stopper idea

My '67 bench seat folds forward. It has a bracket (and adjustment screw) that prevents it from moving back. You can adjust the angle of the seat back to a certain degree. I'll try to take a picture this evening and post it here. By the way, it is the stock '67 seat.

Or maybe just replace that screw with something a bit more easy to unscrew?
Hmmm, probably lots of options if you go that route. Jewels, what would you think about a small button or incision or precise hole in your cool seat cover? |

there are all kinds of ideas here.... the hole in the cover doesnt big me as long as its cleanly done (i can do that - i'm a women, and i sew!).... i like the idea of a more temporary screwed in bolt or even a rod - which would allow the seat to tilt forward.... also - i would REALLY be interested in the pics of your 67 bench seat, and how they hooked up their mechanism... keep the ideas coming! this is great! jewels.

Jewels, my stock 68 seat(at least I think it is stock) tilts forward and I did not modify anything. I attached a pic of how it works. Maybe you could weld a stop on the seat frame, although that might be a problem since you have it upolstered.

Jewels; As I understand it any of these benches can be modified to do what you want by adding an adjustment bolt and pad to the seat support--some came from the factory with this to adjust the "pitch" of the seat back. However, I've also been told the original upholstery on the more deluxe trucks would not allow this. I'm going to try posting a pic here(Be gentle, it's my first time) showing what I understand is the original style upholstery on the deluxe trucks. As you can see, the cover over the steel seat supports won't allow the seat forward

I seen a guy that used one of those pins w/ the release button on the end of it, I saw another one where a guy used a real big chrome "wing-nut" style bolt (have no idea where he got it from)

There were 2 syles of bench seats. One, call the full foam seat has the fixed back as your descibe and is the only seat available after 68 I think. The other, which was standard in 67/68, with the full foam being optional, is the one Slammed67 descibes. it does fold forward. It has a thin pad (not full foam) and has arched springs to make it's shape.

i am not for certain that when i picked up my bench seat that it was specifically from a 1968.... it was jsut the proper color and make/model of seat --- who knows what year truck it came from.... i think i am going to go lookin in the junkyard for a bench seat that folds, and try and take the brackets off of one of those to adapt to my seat ---- sound like a plan? cool! jewels.

Loosen, rather than remove, Screw 1. Cut a slot in the bend of the bracket below Screw 1. You could then fold the back forward, but the bracket resting on the loosened screw will not allow if to tilt back. If the slot weakens the braket too much, it could be doubled or replaced with a bracket fabbed from thicker steel.

thanks wes, but as i said before, my bench is specially covered, and i dont want to get rid of her...
here is what i'm thinking for modification of my existing brackets.... just remove screw 1, cut this slot for screw 1, and put a screw or bolt back in place.... we will see if it works... jewels.
