thanks for the advice ill be sure to read up a little more on transmission rebuilding before attempting to do so, and that is pretty smart i would have never thought of that im pretty sure it will save me a lot of trouble in the future..... by the way is it possible to lift a transmission with an engine hoist to have it off the ground when working on the clutch or is it safer to just leave it on the ground? another thing around how many floor jacks should i use to lift the transmission back in place?

If you have a Harbor Freight store nearby, pick up an inexpensive tranny jack. I finally bought one for my last trans swap and it made a world of difference. Trans gets strapped to the jack so it doesn't want to fall off. It also has four spinning casters so it made it easy to roll into place.

Don't forget to place a jack or block of wood under the engine so it's just not hanging from the engine mounts. I used a block of wood and bottle jack.

If your leaving the engine in the truck , you can use a jack but id suggest having someone help, or you can use a transmission jack, they make a few different types i bought a cheap scissor one from harbor freight , if you look at post #97 of my build thread you can get a idea of how to do it:

mine is a automatic but same idea....I used a jack and block of wood to support the engine at the oilpan and 4 small jack stands at the rear end and two large jack stands at the front end...

i see , well lucky for me a harbor freight just opened up down the street they have a lot of good stuff, sadly due to my low budget im gonna have to stick with man power...... but sure enough ill buy one in the next month or two barely building up my tools and equipment so ill be sure to add that to the list....... hopefully ill be able to get the clutch done this weekend going to the auto parts store today and ordering the clutch set hope its here by the weekend , another thing, with the clutch set what is recommended to buy the more economical one or to spend a little more money on a better one?

In my youth I always used muscle to install 3 and 4 speed manual transmissions. These days I also use a Harbor Freight transmission jack. Much less dangerous and gives you a lot more time to deal with alignment issues, especially if you're working alone.

If you're really on a tight budget and want to avoid the cost of a jack you won't use very often, a standard 3 speed transmission isn't all that much work for one person. Even better, if you have a removable floor pan, you can have a buddy (someone you trust) assist from the top while you manipulate the transmission from underneath.

If you're going to drive the truck like a normal car (not going to beat it up), I would go with a good quality stock replacement unit from a name brand chain store like Napa. I have a Centerforce clutch and it works fine, but the weights rattle during shifting and performance clutches have more of a tendency to chatter on take off.

yea, well its going to be a good learning experience for me, like that tip about the four long bolts to slide the transmission into the bell housing i know im going to be using that a couple times and without that advice i would have been struggling to get that thing aligned, but more than likely ill take it down to the shop were i help out in the weekends nd see if i can use the equipment there ....... around how long does it take to change the clutch set? (for a new guy)

If everything goes well and the parts are on hand a clutch replacement could be done in an hour or two. The problem being the scope of the project can grow (a lot) once you get in there and find something else needing attention. Reading up ahead of time really helps cut down time under the truck if you've become familiar with what you're doing. When working on 50 year old stuff however, it’s not uncommon for 15 minute projects to take a week or more to finish.

the thing i like about auto zone and advance auto parts is that they give you a lifetime warranty with the new clutch Napa only gives you 12 months




My plan is change the clutch set,rear main seal, and the input shaft seal ...... hopefully that will keep me safe from any oil getting back into the clutch and it burning again


and i noticed that when i was changing my water pump and adding some gauges, broke my thermostat housing took almost four weeks to get a part

Tony,
i put that same advance auto parts clutch in my 66 c10 about 1 1/2 years ago. Drive it to work and back everyday about 40 miles round trip and have great service out it.

thanks for the input........ just wanted to make sure if that was a good one...... i already ordered it they said it should be here by tomorrow so i might start a new thread if i need help on installing the new clutch
