Frame Swap Questions?
Hey there guys!
I'm gonna start a 1949 Chevy truck S10 frame swap I have pink slips (Title) under my name for both truck and both are in NON-OP at the moment, but before i get started id like to know if there are any legal issues i have to look at with the (DMV) or (CHP) (HP) Highway patrol... when i go to the DMV to put my 1949 back on the road do i tell them i put a s10 Frame? what do i do with he S10 title pink slip? do i have to merge both Titles? also for insurance what do i do? If anyone has done this swap successfully and legally please shine some light on me it would be much appreciated. BTW I live in California, Pomona

X2! Use the KISS system. Because they work for DMV don't mean they're gearheads!

Re: Frame Swap Questions?
Some of the states will look for the frame stamping to see if it matches the body. California CHP does this. Take both titles in and they will merge the 2. The only problem I had with that was they may want to make a 2012 vs. the 1949. Ask them if they can make it the 49.

Re: Frame Swap Questions?
It would probably be prudent to go ask beforehand. It's always better to find out about any issues you might have before you start taking things apart.
The 53 frame doesn't have any numbers stamped on it as far as I know of so that shouldn't be an issue but the S-10 frame has numbers stamped in several places. I'm still not a fan of these S-10 frame swaps unless your original frame is junk or missing. |

Re: Frame Swap Questions?
I live in CA as well. When I reinstated my non op they didn't do any physical check what so ever. All they cared about was that I payed my license fees and got insurance.

Re: Frame Swap Questions?
I didn't put this on post #5 but what ever you decide I would register the truck as is before mentioning the frame change.
In other words register and tag it and wait a few months and then do the "oh by the way" I did some modifactions to my truck including swapping in and S-10 frame, do I need to make any adjustments on the title to reflect that? I wouldn't let the S-10 title go and would probably put a photo copy of it in with the other papers (registration and insurance) just in case there was a concern by those in authority. With all the stolen parts floating around these days that would turn a possible question as to where the frame came from into an "ok, I see" thing. |
