New owner and have a couple questions please.
Been lurking around this board for a long time never posted. Great forum!!!!!
Finally got a truck but not sure about a few things. The guy I got it from told me it was a rare truck cause it is a 59 with an original 447 engine. Everything I have read was 347 in a 57 but 336 in 59. Here is the truck and a pic of the engine. Can anyone tell me what engine it is by looking? I havent had any luck finding the plate yet gotta de-grease a bit. |

Re: New owner and have a couple questions please.
Welcome! I found this on line:
"The standard engines for 1959 GMC trucks were the in-line six-cylinder 270, 302 or the 347 cubic-inch V-8. The cylinder block and upper crankcase were cast as one-piece. The type 270 motor produced 130 to 140 horsepower at 3,400 rpm with a compression ratio of 7.75-to-1. The type 302 had a 4-inch bore and stroke and generated 160 horsepower." Based on the horsepower figures on the data plate, which are higher than the 270 and 302 I am guessing it is a 347. You might find more information over at stovebolts.com.

1/2 ton (10) Long bed (2) 336 V8 (8) Pontiac MI assembly plant (P) S is the series If it were T and not an S then it could have been a 347 or if it was a 152 instead of a 102 on the first 3 number it could also be a 347 in 58-9 Could be a 59 or 9 depending on the 17844 and where that falls in the production run. Get the numbers on the block at the oil pan next to the dip stick. This is a 336 Pontiac (GMC) engine http://www.angelfire.com/mi2/jrvvehi...afterSmall.jpg http://p-wee.tripod.com/index022005.jpg Its is rare even with a 336 and its a complete motor air cleaner to pan. Thats worth a few bucks by itself |

He didn't give you the pitch that "GMC's are better than Chevrolets because they have a heavier duty frame under them" did he? That was one that my former stepfather and his cronies passed around in the late 50's. That's a good looking truck that doesn't look like it has been messed with too much so you might just have a good one. The engine was based on a 347 Pontiac and was fairly stout in it's day. |
