Interior Color Questions

I am new to this forum and have really enjoyed reading, seeing and researching the wealth of articles, pics and amount of information since the first of the year. I am also the new owner of a 72 SWB Cheyenne Super. I have done some initial mechanical work and am starting to think about the interior. I would like to restore this vehicle to like new condition and keep it as stock as possible. My initial question has to do with the center console and the door panels. They appear to be a blue metallic (similar to the seats) and not the #510 blue the body parts are painted. Does anyone have any information that would help clarify if this is "stock" or have they been refinished by a PO? PT'S70CST has been a huge help so far in providing his experiences with refinishing the console and I greatly appreciate his help.

Re: Interior Color Questions

I am no expert at color coding for restorations, but there are many on the board. One will come along soon.

I just wanted to say welcome to the forum and you have a GORGEOUS truck!

I have a ton of pics in my build thread that you can check out for ideas if you decide to go your own route for the interior, our trucks are matching cousins.

Re: Interior Color Questions

Clean truck.

I believe the color of the upholstery is correct. It has a somewhat metallic look to it, but I think that is just the way things were. It isn't the same color as the exterior/interior, but it is right.

Re: Interior Color Questions

Hey, my truck's twin is just an hour away! Welcome. I agree with special, the door panels have been painted. Everything else inside appears to be the factory color though. One thing that sticks out to me is your black non-tilt column, it should be blue.

It seems like the repop blue interior parts are a lighter blue, my factory dash pad was darker like yours, the new one looks like this-

Here's a pic of a restored bucket seat interior I lifted of The Truck Shop's site. Pay no attention to the cupholder console or painted tilt column.

Re: Interior Color Questions

It is hard to tell if the truck has been repainted on the inside somewhere in the past 35 years. The interior seems to either fade or darken some with age over the years. If you will look at Powell72's the console in his truck is # 510 and looks to be more of an interior paint unlike the outside that is alot more glossy. SEM carries that shade of blue but is will have to be mixed to my knowledge and color matched to your liking. These trucks are very hard to get dead on accurate. If you are planning to restore it then I would go with the # 510 on the inside metal parts as is on the outside. I have looked for interior colors for these trucks with no great luck and I do not know if you can find a chip sheet for the interior as you can for the outside panels.

Good luck and nice truck, your ashtray is on its way.

Re: Interior Color Questions

Thanks for the nice comments. I purchased the vehicle on Ebay strictly from the pics and in general, was pleased with the condition, especially for the price I paid. The truck, best that I can tell is original. Parts of the cab and doors have been repainted. There is a fair amount of rust behind the wheel wells (front and back) and the rockers. The cab corners appear to be in very good shape so they might have been replaced as well. The PO did a nice job repainting the firewall when he rebuilt the engine so I won't have to do that. I have new inner fenders and core support that I will install when I do the the exterior of the truck. That's another project for another year. Thanks for all the help and I feel lucky to have found such a great forum!

Re: Interior Color Questions

After evaluating all the comments, thoughts and pics, I am going to have Painter's Supply/Denver formulate a color to match new blue upholstery. I will also combine the input that PT'S70CST has provided for stripping and preparing the existing console and door panels with painter's supply of shooting an acrylic lacquer vs. an acrylic enamel or polyurethane. They have indicated the originals were shot in lacquer and that I would get much better adhesion than if I used the enamel or urethane. If it doesn't hold up, it won't be too tough to redo. If anyone has any thoughts along this line, I would love the hear them. Also, thanks to everyone who contributed comments/help to my original question(s)!

Re: Interior Color Questions

Go with the lacquer if they can get it in that color, lacquer is getting very hard to find anymore and I think you will have very good results out of the lacquer. If you need any thing else fell free to pm me.

Re: Interior Color Questions

I was thinking the console in that truck looked a little too light.

I painted this console with OER brand paint I got from Classic Industries, just in case someone doesn't have a means to spray. I thought it was pretty darn close for rattle can paint. But I would rather do it the way PT says if possible.-

Re: Interior Color Questions

After researching the topic of "what was the original console and door panel color", I do not know that there is a clear cut answer. Seems some people think that the color matches the painted body panels on the interior and some think they were painted to match the upholstery. Since mine was painted to match the upholstery, I am going to go with that approach. As it turns out, we couldn't get a PPG formula for the metallic blue that we came up with (eyeball color matching). I do know they started with a base metalllic color and added some other colors to get the match. I am real happy with the "wet sample" match. I wish all of this could of been of more help to others with a formula but I guess it wasn't possible. I did find in my research, original color charts from PPG that can be downloaded from the below link.
http://www.tcpglobal.com/autocolorlibrary/
I assume a lot of you know about this link already but thought I'd mention it to those who hadn't heard of it. If you have any questions, PM me and I will try to help out. Lastly, thanks to all who contributed to this topic!

Nice Truck, can't answere your question about the color, but was wondering about your toolbox. Who makes it. I like how it doesn't stick up over the bed.

I don't know about the toolbox. These pics were taken by the PO and I didn't get the tool box with the truck. Sorry.

Re: Interior Color Questions

This is a GM code and here is a chip sheet to go by. It is hard to tell by the pic but if the color matches what you have the code is 506. Here is the web site that I bought the paint from and it is kind of high. I have one full can that I would be willing to let go of if this is your color and you can do the console with two cans. http://www.paintscratch.com/cgi-bin/makepaint2.cgi The shade on this website is a little off but the # on the can I have is 506 ss (single stage) dark olive metallic, the same as the consoles that I sent you the link to.
