Thumbs up 1960 GMC K1000 4x4

Hey guys got another project truck this is my second truck ive build a 1964 gmc 1000. It was a great learning experience and as im sure you can see in my thread how my skills have come along page by page. I really hope to kick this trucks ass and make it everything i ever wanted!

My plans for the truck are a org restore with a touch of myself I will also keep a few things from the P.O that i like on the truck it really tore the guy up selling the truck he had owned the truck for 27 years and his step father bought the truck in 1963. The main paint color will be dark blue inside and out along with flat and gloss black. The out side will have a similar paint scheme as my 64 and the inside is still coming together in my mind there's so many more lines with the wrap around front window i love it!

From P.O

Re: 1960 GMC K1000 4x4

66Gilbert, do you know the difference in the trucks that have the transfer case shifter on the right of the main shifter, and the ones that have it on the left?

Mine is a '60 GMC and it is on the right of the shifter, and Kro has this '60 GMC and his is on the left. LOL I have looked and looked today, but can't find the information. I know it was talked about on here at one time, but I cannot find the conversation.

Are you sure that you have a factory Rockwell T221 transfer case? Everyone that I have seen has the transfer case shift stick on left side of the transmission shift stick. I would have to see some pics of your transfer case and the shift assembly that is mounted on the top rear of the transmission to help identify what you have.

Wink Re: 1960 GMC K1000 4x4

The ’60s brought innovations beyond looks. Most of them came on the 4x2 trucks, such as the industry-first independent front truck suspension. In the 4x4 department, GM opted to use the more modern Dana 44 axle as opposed to the Napco-modified GM H-033. GM retained use of the Timken T-221 divorced transfer case, which NAPCO had also used.

You don’t see this t-case often these days. The Timken T-221 was a three shaft case from the 1950s to 1970 in GMCs. It had a good record for reliability, but because it was not a direct-drive unit, it tended to be noisy and run hot. It was a complicated unit with lots of bearings and was based on a Timken design used in 6x6 trucks. Parts are expensive these days.

found this was interesting says its a Timken t-221 66Gilbert you said something about a Rockwell T221 this article is about Suburban Carryalls 4x4s possibly different?

Re: 1960 GMC K1000 4x4

Looks like you are missing the front drive line in the 2nd pic from the bottom in post #13.

Mine is Posi too.

I have been waiting until life slows down a little bit, then I was hoping I could talk A.T. Rockdriller into measuring his grill guard, so at soem point in the future I could fab one of these beasts up.

The front of our trucks look intimidating now, but with one of these brush guards on it, I think they would look even better!

Here is his thread. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=453161

And some pics of the grille guard. I contacted Bustin USA, and they do not have any records of the manufacturing, nor any in stock.
