6 cyl Fan Shroud

Did my 66 292 come with a fan shroud? I've been looking in wrecking yards for a few years and haven't run across any. My engine has been running hot and it would be solution to my problem. Anyone seen any after market ones to fit a 292 inline?
Thanks taclem

Re: 6 cyl Fan Shroud

I bought my V8 shroud from LMC I don't recal if they had a 6cyl one. I'll check around some.

Re: 6 cyl Fan Shroud

Check out page 35 in LMC's online catalog. It does not list engine size. I wonder if the shroud works for both motors?

Re: 6 cyl Fan Shroud

Just wondering out loud but how much of a difference does a shroud do? I don't have a shroud, but do have a new aluminum radiator, and the Texas heat still doesn't bump the temp at all. Maybe time for a larger radiator? Just wondering.
BTW I have a 292 as well in my '63.

Re: 6 cyl Fan Shroud

Shrouds make a big differance by directing all the air directly thru the radiator as opposed to pulling heated air from the engine compartment around and back thru the radiator at slower speeds, you also need to ensure that the high presure side ( front ) is sealed all the way around so its pulling directly from the front of the grille.

Re: 6 cyl Fan Shroud

6 cyl's did not have a full shroud like a v8.... they had a small piece at the top that was rounded looked like about a 1/4 of the full size. was maybe more to keep your fingers out of the fan than a shroud. I have owned countless of these trucks and seen thousands over the years and have never seen anything anymore than this.

Re: 6 cyl Fan Shroud

I put a seven blade fan and fan clutch on mine instead of the whimpy 4 blade mounted directly to the waterpump. works great.

Re: 6 cyl Fan Shroud

Yeah, fairly sure mine did not come with a shroud, it was my grandfathers truck and he definitely would not have pulled something like that out. Hey taclem, Been looking through my 1963 Chevy manual and it's only showing shrouds on the big 50 & 80 series trucks as well as the diesels and V8's. Why wouldn't they have shrouds on the L6's?

Re: 6 cyl Fan Shroud

Some of the 292 equipped trucks came with the bigger radiator comonly used with the V8's. If you happen to have this radiator, the common V8 shroud will of course bolt up, but I don't know how well it would fit the location of the fan on a I6.

Re: 6 cyl Fan Shroud

Go to speedway motors you can buy fan shroud blanks from walker radiator, measure rad and pick the style you need...maybe this will work.

pressure and anti-freeze both work in conjunction in keeping operating temperatures down . what pressure is your cap amd a 50-50 mix of antifreeze is recommended
are you having overheating problems or is it just the guage reading high?

Pics and details? The clutch less fan bugs me. The sound makes me think I'm always spinning the motor faster than I really am.

Re: 6 cyl Fan Shroud

Thanks for the offer. Right now I can't honestly say what I need since I've driven the truck very little and haven't hooked up my temp gauge yet. I just know the sound of the fixed fan bugs me, the only other time I've heard that noise is in my more modern truck is if I park it for a few mins on a really hot day and first start it and drive the thermo clutch fan locks and it makes the same sound.
Driving with a fixed fan just seems inefficient to me even tho I know the truck has done it for 40plus years just fine

Re: 6 cyl Fan Shroud

There was a metal shroud that went from the firewall to the radiator on my 63 when it had the original harrison radiator. It did not come past the radiatior, just boxed in the sides. I can supply pics of this part if needed. I only channeled the air into the radiator, but did nothing for the air coming out the rear.

Re: 6 cyl Fan Shroud

Yup the baffle, thats it. Thanks aerotruk63. Ill also note that the 6cyl baffle will not work when using an 8cyl aftermarket radiator (champion). I do not know if it will work on a factory v8 radiatior.

Re: 6 cyl Fan Shroud

Sorry about taking my post down...I was selling some parts and this was one of them.

But this is what the 64 shroud looked like in my truck.

It fit the small 18 inch radiator and was cooling a 250 straight 6 out of an el camino.
