Is this the correct crossmember?
It appears to me that the current transmission crossmember on my '71 isn't the right one. The reason I think this is because the rear of the transmission seems really low, especially when you compare the angles of the transmission output and the driveshaft. So hopefully someone can confirm if this is indeed a correct auto trans. crossmember for a '67-'72.
I for sure know it's not the original crossmember since the truck used to be a three-on-the-tree truck. It also looks like the wrong transmission mount because I've never seen a round hockey puck style mount on these trucks.

Re: Is this the correct crossmember?
No, that's the wrong crossmember.
The correct one is flat along the bottom and mounts inside the frame webs, not below it. They also have a wing on each side that goes up and mounts to the top of the frame rail too. Image stolen from google...

Re: Is this the correct crossmember?
Thanks for that picture. I had searched google but could only find top views of the crossmembers, which didnt help me. Do you have any opinion on aftermarket crossmembers vs. factory crossmembers?

Re: Is this the correct crossmember?
I like factory ones myself. I have always felt that GM engineers know a lot more than most aftermarket engineers do. I like the way they tie the upper and lower frame sections together at an angle. It stiffens the frame a lot.

Re: Is this the correct crossmember?
Should be able to find one in a salvage yard just remember that they originally were riveted in and you have to cut the rivets or blow torch them off.
As low as that crossmember is, can you remount it on the upper part of the frame or maybe bolt it to the top section? |

Re: Is this the correct crossmember?
Or put in longer bolts and some spacers to lift it up some?
