So... I've known for awhile that mine are rusted through on the bottom, but seem fine where they join the floor. Several vendors have them on their websites for ~$15, but a couple have "slip-on" repair panels. I don't have a shop or even a garage - just a driveway & carport. Think it's okay to cut away the rot & go with a slip-on? I can probably borrow a welder or get someone to weld it up for me. I just don't want to get into a major project; I need the truck to get to work!

Sounds like a reasonable repair to me. Although replacing the whole piece for $15 bucks isn't bad either

Do it right, a slip on is a cover up ala used car cover up.

There's no difference at all in initial cost, so that's not an issue.

My concern now is whether I can replace the support entirely without it being a major job; i.e., more than I can reasonably do in my driveway. Is there major sheet metal surgery involved? Does the cab need to be raised up - worse yet, removed? If so, there's just no way I can do it myself - therefore the question about the slip-on patch panels.

Simply, if it's much of a job, I'll have to farm it out.
