Camper Special Question

I am looking at a 1969 C20 Longbox with Camper Wiring and Camper Nameplate on the spid. If it was a heavy duty camper truck shouldn't it have more camper references on the Spid? I'd post a pic of the spid but got the spid pic from an email and can't seem to attach to a post using my IPad and I'm 1800 miles from home on holiday. The truck has coils in the back with an auxiliary spring ( which shows on the spid too ) and I'm wondering what kind of Camper Truck this is as I dont think you could put gobs of weight with the rear coils. The truck is also has a 396/TH400 combo with factory A/C and buckets and console.

I don't really have an answer for you, but my dads friend had a 68 Custom Camper that he scrapped but it had a 396, buddy buckets, and rear coils also.

Yes, I believe what you have there is a "custom camper" (vice camper special - camper special terminology wasn't a chevy thing until 73 and later, I THINK - but Ford used the camper special terminology earliest). Anyhoo - yes, you have "it" - the nameplate is just what it implies - there should be a "custom camper" nameplate on the truck somewhere and the camper wiring (on the SPID) and other heavy duty items ordered were for the specific purpose of putting on a camper. For 69-70, I believe your nameplate replaces the Custom 20 nameplate mid-fender - i.e. you should have a "Custom Camper 20" nameplate, possibly with the engine size plate centered underneath. Sicklajoie can probably give you tons of info on the specifics because he has a gorgeous one. (1st & 2nd Pic). He has just about the most gorgeous one I've ever seen (hope you don't mind me posting a few pics I saved of your truck sicklajoie!)

In 71/72's, for example - "Custom Camper" became the wording on the SPID, but that option still only got you the name plate just above the door handles (subsequent pics). However, it did mean you had a "Custom Camper" because the camper wiring (and maybe a few more things, not sure) were required to be able to order the Custom Camper option - i.e. the nameplate. Last pic is an example of how it would be worded on a 71/72 SPID.

To qualify for the Custom Camper namplate (a stand alone no charge option), a coil spring 1969 C20 truck needed to be equipped with the following options:
- Front stabilizer bar (F59)
- HD Rear springs (G50) or auxiliary rear springs(G60)
- HD rear shocks (G68 or F51)
- Any of the following tires
7.50-16/8 ply highway (R68)
8.00-16.5/10 ply highway (RP4)
8.75-16.5/8ply highway (RP6)
8.75-16.5/8ply on-off road (RQ4)
9.50-16.5 8 ply highway (RP9)
9.50-16.5/8ply on-off road (RQ5)
10-16.5/6ply highway (R79)

Camper wiring was NOT required.

If these options were ordered, then the Custom Camper nameplate could be added at no charge if desired.

One other comment about the coils vs. leaf springs with a large camper... the coil springs support the weight OK, but the leafs do provide a more stable platform. I carried an 11' camper (3' overhang) for years. Lots of bounce and wallow!

excellent info! Thanks for the correction on the wiring, I recall some pics on here of the pigtail and now that you mention it, I do recall it was separate deal (now that you've mentioned it). That's probably why it's listed on the SPID when someone gets it. Haivng said that, I've never seen a custom camper without the camper wiring, but I'm sure there's some out there. Also did not know the name plate was no charge?!? That's just cool. I would think every one that bought all the required stuff would want the nameplate, but some like to be non-descript, I suppose. Not me, I'd want Custom Camper on my door in neon lights if they'd let me...

My 69 has all the required options plus a couple more HD options like HD front springs and shocks and the camper wiring. It's also a CST. It does not carry the Custom Camper nameplate, but has the "CST/20" nameplate. If the 69s had the nameplate above the "8-350" (I think they did) rather than on the door, it would have replaced the CST/20. I think I'd prefer the CST nameplate as I think they were less common. It was dealer ordered, so they may have figured it'd be more marketable that way.

Thanks everyone for the clarifications. The spid shows that the truck has front stabilizer, HD Springs, and the HD shocks. If you guys want to see the truck its on Ebay right now, I'd post a link but again, IPad limitations, and the truck is black and white. If it is, I've eyeballed that one on there for a bit also - I think it's a very, very nice truck (but I'm looking for a 72).

The rust around the doors/rockers might be an issue - but the bid is low and if it stays low, the rust can easily be fixed. Looks very solid otherwise - and it's got buckets, probably pretty rare for a non-CST custom camper...

If this is the truck, I hope you get it, I think it's really nice.

hey, quick question for y'all related to custom campers - I stated above that 71/72 would have the script over the door - but now that I think of it, last week when I was in Indiana, I stumbled across a 71 Custom Camper 20, and, of course, practically locked up the brakes to pull off the highway and look at it. It was definitely a 71, saw the VIN, yet it had what I normally associate with a 69/70 custom camper20 nameplate on the fender (as in the pic of sicklajoie's truck, above).

Can anyone confirm what "nameplate" a 71 got? Was it the over the door script, like a 72, or the fender nameplate like a 69/70?

I really hope you grab it, it's pretty darn nice in my book - if I didn't have my heart set on a 72, I'd jump on it. I'm always looking for interesting and unique trucks like the 69 black CST with 3onthe tree, A/C etc. that I bought last spring. Ive been wanting 3/4 ton for a while now and like this one. If I can buy it right I will, then drive it for a while and decide if I will keep it or sell it. I like this truck cause of the BB, A/C and buckets and the coil rear end,which make it ( in my mind) unique. I just bought another 99 mint Cop Tahoe off Ebay and I'm definatly keeping that one.

i know your question has been answered already but though id add that i had a 1969 chev with coils and overloads, i had the thing stacked up to the roof one time with wood and you could hardly tell a difference in the ride height

This is the SPID on mine.

It's a CST also, but the only place that shows it is the emblem on glovebox.

Absolutely, those HD coils are heavy freakin duty. I'd love to know what the actual spring rate of those things are.

here's another one to muddy the waters... Since from Tehachapi, it's probably fairly rust-free. I saw this on craigslist (or something like that, don't recall) locally a while back - and, again, if was looking for that year, might have gone to look at it. Again, probably a pretty solid truck. I (personally) prefer the engines to be pretty original - that's just me though. Nice truck!
