Hubcap Retention Policy

Greetings--

I've been having trouble keeping my front left dog-dish hubcap on lately. Took a fairly sharp turn this weekend and off she went onto the local golf course. Fore! I did score some golf balls during my search so it wasn't too bad and ultimately did find the hubcap in the ditch. They are the original painted caps and are not in fantastic shape so it's not a huge deal, cosmetically speaking.

That being said, I've just finished restoring my set of stainless caps that will be going on it soon and I really don't want those to start flying away on me. Any tips? My first thought would be to move it to a rear wheel to see if that helps during the turns or perhaps move the entire wheel to the rear. I can remember them falling off every now and again when my grandfather owned it that past 40 years so it's nothing new apparently.

Thanks.

Yep. As a result eventually we went to "bolt on" caps across the board - by management edict.

Re: Hubcap Retention Policy

I've never had a hubcap fall off,and I've run many a truck with them. I imaging if one does it's either mis-shaped or stretched out somehow. The only time I've seen them come off is on 4wds hitting the deep mud or water real hard. And,that's the front ones, only. I figure it's hydraulic pressure from water/mud being forced into the little bit of space around the hub with nowhere to go once in there.

Re: Hubcap Retention Policy

I "flung a flipper" on my '54 Ford, one day. Enlisted a girl friend to ride with me and revisited my path....and I was 12 miles from home...and she spotted it in a ditch. Guess nobody wanted those Lancer 4-bars if they only found one.

Re: Hubcap Retention Policy

Lost the front left again but found it on the same golf course! Time to swap that one to the back I suppose. Three of my wheels came from the same mid-80's Chevy truck. The fourth came from a different donor. I'm guessing that may be the wheel that is giving me troubles.
