Right Stall converter??

I know you're supposed to base the stall convert off the CAM. Thats where my problem comes into play. I bought the engine used so i have no cam card or cam sticker, and i have no idea what cam it could be

I do know it is a Comp Cams. And there is a sticker on one valve cover with 10 part numbers and an executive order number(D-279-6)

It supposedly is a 383 stroker motor.
Ive narrowed it down to about 5 different cams it could possibly be

12-207-2 duration: 255/261 lift: .421/.451 050: 203/212

12-208-2 duration: 265/269 lift: .442/.465 050: 211/221

12-206-2 duration: 260/260 lift: .440/.440 050 212/212

12-210-2 duration: 268/268 lift: .454/.454 050: 218/218

Now this one has a higher lift, so if it was a stroker motor maybe this one?:
12-106-3 duration: 342/342 lift: .447/.447 050: 222/222

Any ideas??
How can find out what cam i have?
Are those numbers different enough to make much of difference in choosing stall converters

i would probably not go over 3000 on the stall, my cam looks to be bigger than that and that's all i'm running and it works fine

If it is a mildly built 383, my money is on the 210-2 cam (268) With 268 NOT being the lift, but the duration at .050.

Run a heavy duty stock convertor unless your going to romp on it all the time. What's the rear gear ratio?, tire size?

I've got a very snotty cam in my SBC and the stall I have is 2,800.

I would go on the side of caution and say 2400 to 2600. If you have a low rear gear lean more toward the 2600 side. If you do go with much over a stock stall and you drive in traffic a cooler at least and a cooler with a fan would be a good idea to keep the trans temp down. Also a deeper pan so you can have more fluid[more fluid=more cooling] and a trans temp gauge are not badideas either. Jim

Might just want to stop guessing. It is an unknown used engine. Pull the pan to look at the bottom end, oil pump and verify it is a stroker. Pull the timing gear to verify the cam numbers. Sticker could have come from anywhere.

going through this now with my converter, mine is being built or if you call TCI/B&M etc. the more info you can give them the better.

cam duration and lift @.50
truck weight
rear gear
tire size
engine hp @ flywheel
what are you doing with it, street/strip, towing. track etc.
A long time ago I R&R'd transmissions for a little while and asked the builders a ton of questions. The more info you can give them the better. I have seen plenty of overstalled converters kill the performance of a good engine.
I personally don't like to guess. I would verify what I could.

What are you using the rig for? Make sure you know what you are getting into if you are looking at a 3,000 stall on the street.

Yup... If you're towing and hauling... that 3,000 stall will make a lot of extra heat in the tranny.

I had a b&m stall that was crap it never impressed me than decided to have one built for my application and what a difference it made. MPC Midwest performance converter

I run a 3000 stall behind my 383 with GM hot cam and 3.73 rearend. I have a Bowtie 700r4
And the combo works great. It is a Circle D converter.

I stated before i'm running a 2800 small boss hogg converter with cooler and it works great with my 383 3:73 gear and a split duration lunati cam
specs are lift is 465/488 duration 290/300

I dont want to race it or anything like that. I just basically want it to be a cruiser, i dont plan on towing much with it but i'd like to have the capability if need be.

I have pretty good size tires on 15x8 rims.
I believe the gear ratio is 4.11 but i eventually want to swap out the rear end with a ford and 3.73 gears unless the 4.11 are better for cruising and overdrive. I want to be able to have pretty decent take off capability but then again i'm not gonna be racing it.

With 4:11 or 3:73 you'll have plenty of take off with that 383, they are torque monsters

Any of the cams listed, will be mild in a 383. Your stock converter will work just fine.

Call ALL of the converter companys. They know better than anyone. Have ALL of your info and they will tell you what to run.
