350 vs 700r4 length

I tried the search before I asked, but couldnt find an answer. My 74 shortbed originally came with a 350/350 combo. They are both long gone now. I have a 400 to install but now might be trading it for a 700r4. Im guessing my 350 had a 9" tail shaft but not sure. Am I going to need to lengthen or shorten my drive shaft?? Is the column shift brackets going to adapt or do I need them from an 80s truck?? Thanks for any info, Matt.

Drive shaft and the linkage will both work.

Well if my stock driveshaft will work that will save me some coin. Thanks for the info.

Re: 350 vs 700r4 length

My '74 had the long tailshaft, and the 700R4 went right in. I did have to move the crossmember, like Rich mentioned. Not an issue at all. Driveshaft and linkage works like a charm.

Re: 350 vs 700r4 length

If your truck had a long shaft TH350 then you don't need to do anything, the driveshaft slip right in. How do I know, my 1974 was an original TH350 (they originally came with long shafts) and I put in a 700R4 and used the original drivesaft.

I dont remember if my 350 was a long tail or not. Does one of you have a measurement of the driveshaft?

Re: 350 vs 700r4 length

A "short tail" TH350's extention housing is roughly 6" long.

A "long tail" TH350's extention housing is roughly 9" long.

As I stated above I dont have the trans anymore so I cant measure it. Thats why I asked the length of driveshaft.

Linkage should work just fine. Just need to change the indicator in the dash. Easy swap.

If you can wait a bit I can slide under my truck and measure the driveshaft on my truck.

Do you know where I can get the new indicator besides a wrecking yard?

If that option doesn't pan out, LMC truck (cheapest) has them along with a few others.

On Ebay:

Classic Industries:
http://www.classicindustries.com/truck/parts/17140.html

LMC:
http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cc/full.aspx?Page=136

(It says it is for later models than yours but that is only due to the availability of the 700, it will mount just fine with no mods)

Or, Yes, Junkyard but if you are like me, you most likely will leave the junkyard with it and a host of other parts you found and an empty wallet....
