Flex plates - all the same or is there a benefit?
My existing '70 402 flexplate has a couple of chipped teeth and a note from the machine shop that did the engine machining and balancing that says "Bad - Do Not Use", with no other explanation.
So, I figured I'd just order a new one, but I see they range from $35.99 to over $200, even within the same brand (Pioneer, in this case). Granted the really expensive ones are SFI certified which I don't need, but beyond that is there really any difference amongst them? On O'Reily's alone I have six to choose from, not sure what to look for. Thanks! Dave PS: If if matters, I'll be running a TH200-4R behind it with a smaller than stock converter, but I don't think it should matter. The original is your standard neutral-balanced, 14 inch, 168 toother.

Re: Flex plates - all the same or is there a benefit?
My old GM flexplate was messed up & had gone egg-shaped. I replaced it with the cheapest sfi approved one Summit had @ $50ish bucks. As long as it's the proper balance (internal), for your type of crankshaft (2 piece seal) & the right tooth count, they are all the same...

A lot of the higher priced flexplates have the SFI ratings so they can be used in drag racing and roundy round stuff. If you've just got a stock or warmed over 402... a lower dollar original replacement will be fine.

Not all the same, go with a GM flex plate or risk starter problems down the road. Just my humble opinion.
