bad gas in my tank from sitting

My gas went bad in my truck from sitting. I just pulled the tank out and drained it. I am going to put some fresh gas in the tank and rinse it around while it is out for an week or so, then drain it back out, then I will re install the tank. I didn't realize bad gas smelled that bad, I usually like smell of gas.

Add sta-bil to your next tank once you re install the tank. Helps keep today's gas from going bad.

x2 on the Sta-bil if the gas will be sitting for a while. Bad gas smells of turpentine. Can't remember how many times I have seen it screw up an engine. There was a certain customer with an old Dodge truck with a 225 slant-6, brought the head in with stuck intake valves. After I fixed it the guy brought it back twice again with stuck valves before I convinced him to flush the tank.

Re: bad gas in my tank from sitting

It has been off the road for a while. Up until about an year or so, I would start it
regularly, then the carburetor started going bad, so I didn't start it as often. I just had the carburetor rebuilt. I removed the sending unit out of the tank, and cleaned out a few loose particles today. The tank is very clean inside as far as I can see. I have about 2 gallons of fresh gas in there now that I am going to rinse around in the tank through out the week, then I will drain it and put the tank back in my truck.

Re: bad gas in my tank from sitting

I asked how long because I've owned my truck for 11 years and have only put 5000 miles on it in that time. The first few years I owned the truck I drove it daily from April till October and because of our harsh Winters parked the truck ( inside ) over the 6 months of Winter. The last 3 or 5 years I have driven the truck sparingly in the summer and sometimes it is sitting for 9 moths betwenn starts and I've never had a problem with bad gas, but then we are not using ethanol up here. When I found out about Stabil I started using it and usually have my gas tank at least 3/4 ful when I park the truck for the long haul.

Re: bad gas in my tank from sitting

I have had great luck with Seafoam in my truck, in fact it has been great for all of my equipment. Treat my gas cans with it and add to my yard tools, no problems in a few years...says it stabilizes fuel for 2 years....

Hey Greg,

I have never had a problem either until this time. I have a bad habit of letting my vehicles sit too much. I have never even added anything to fuel before, but I will now. I always have heard people having problems with gas going bad from sitting, I would always say I have never had that problem until now Lesson learned.

Re: bad gas in my tank from sitting

None of those additives help after a certain amount of time...none. It's that stinkin' ethenol! I had this issue with my tow truck, which also ended up with a rebuilt carb, flushing the tank, rinsed with 2 gallons of hi-test,etc. I put 5 gallons of Cam 2 in that rascal because it's going to continue to sit.No ethanol, more octane to begin with,it's cheaper in the long run. Oughta help clean the pipes, doncha think?
