I'm pretty positive it depends on the year of the transmission, but more than likely no.

No computer is needed for a 700r and no the converter is not the same as the 350/400 turbo transmissions. It's the 4l60e that needs the computer. As for the pain points there not very strong if you have much more than a stock engine. I'm sure others will have their stories to add

Unless you have a built transmission from a raceshop or something. But I think most would agree the TH400 is a really strong good transmission.

You can run a 700 without a computer and a Lockup converter, I have one in my truck that has no Lockup. The valve body has to have some simple mods done to make it happen. However if you want a lockup, then there are kits from B&M and other companies that will let you do that.

I have one i bought a b&m lock up for summit you to lock up to get the most gas mileage easy to hook up.

No computer required. I love my 700r4. In our trucks it likes a 3.73+ gear. Had it since '98 & had it rebuilt 1x in that time. I use the Painless Wiring kit for it to run the lock up but there are cheaper solutions out there.

There is a way to make it lockup automatically in the transmission with no electronics required.

Heres what I've learned about running a 700R4 without a computer.
1) You need a 1992 or older 700R4.
2) Instal a Lockup Kit.
3) Instal a adjustable Vacuum switch and a Brake lever switch.
4) Instal a TV cable, and have all components adjusted properly.
5) Enjoy the hell out of Overdrive.

I have a 400TH in my BB 67 already. I was needing the info for a 41 chevy PU with a stock 350.It has a 3:73 gear in it. Thanks guys, I'll take what I need out of this thread. Johndawelder

I have a 700r4 out of a '92 (actually denoted as a 4L60...no "e"). I used the overdrive kit from Bowtie overdrives, TV cable & bracket for my quadraBOG, and I converted it from electronic speedo to mechanical speedo in the process. I also added a corvette servo kit to firm up the shifts and I love it! 3.42 gear and a 29" tall tire, it runs out like a champ.

I installed the B&M Lockup Kit with no vacuum switch. Works great! Downshifts as needed. The B&M kit allows you to change lockup points on-the-fly. That is a very nice feature. I'm running 4:11 gears and 2000 stall lockup converter. Turns 2300 RPMs at 70 MPH

I would not recommend a manual valve body just to eliminate the TV cable, if that's what you're leaning to. Adjusting the TV cable is simple and you can use the automatic transmission what it was designed for...as an automatic transmission.

I loved my 700R also, I used the B&M vac switch kit for lock up control and never had a single problem with it. I highly recommend getting the Bowtie Overdrives components for the TV cable, set it how they tell you and enjoy cruising at low RPM. You might also look into the 200R swap, it is easier from what I hear and gear ratios are better, the 1-2 gap on the 700R is a little extreme...

I have a 700r4 in my c10 as well, 327 V8 with a 3.08 rear and I'm getting almost 25mpg. I have the TCI lock up kit and the only major thing the transmission shop stated was proper adjustment of the detent cable or TV cable. Having the right brackets to attach it to your carb is a must!
