Re: Attempting the "$50 paint job"
I am attempting this method as well. I am painting a "test" area in the bed with flat black. I have no experience with flat paint. Will I still have to buff the paint when complete? What does buffing do to flat paint? I am used to getting a shine after buffing, but flat paint doesnt shine"?

How much paint is it taking you to cover your truck?

Re: Attempting the "$50 paint job"
I orginally bought 2 quarts, I'm thinking I might need 2 more. The only place I can get this color local didn't sell it in gallons.

Re: Attempting the "$50 paint job"
Haha it wasn't easy, I only took about 5 pics I wish I would have taken more. I knew they guy that bought it just wanted the motor, there's not telling how it arrived there. My dad swapped the buckets for a bench, I'm sure the motor and axles were swapped along it's journey as well.
It did have 1 emblem left on the dr side fender, I pull it off and gave it to dad. |

Re: Attempting the "$50 paint job"
Coat 6 is on...1/2 way there!!
![]() ![]() Going to wet sand tonight and apply coat 7. I'm running into issues getting light streaks in the paint, I don't know if it's from the mineral spirits (the brand I have is white) or reusing the mixing cups. I went last night and got some clear mineral spirits and enough mixing cups to not have to reuse them. |

Re: Attempting the "$50 paint job"
No, most people said it wasn't needed since the Rustoleum had priming properties.

Re: Attempting the "$50 paint job"
It looks great and I'm tempted to try this with my CUCV. Can you do this with something other than Rustoleum? There's not many color choices there.

Re: Attempting the "$50 paint job"
I'm not sure, I've heard other mention other brands but Rustoleum seems to be the most popular. There are several colors, stores don't carry many besides white and black. I found mine at a little mom and pop store.

Re: Attempting the "$50 paint job"
Yes, you could do the same with any oil based enamel paint. I have used the Tractor supply valspar paint on a couple of projects; it worked great. I also hear that ACE hardware store paint is good.
When I get closer to painting my truck, I am going to look at using PPG ALK-200 enamel. I have read that it can be matched to any of the PPG color codes.

Re: Attempting the "$50 paint job"
I appreciate the info and for you sharing this. It looks like a perfect solution for my CUCV, I just need to find an oil based enamel in an olive drab I like.

Re: Attempting the "$50 paint job"
I used TS valspar paint for the first time today and it was total garbage, It had about 2" of sludge at the bottom I had to try to stir but I still couldn't get all of it after 15 minutes of trying. Ive never had that with Rustoleum, not even today with another can of it.

Re: Attempting the "$50 paint job"
I need advice. Monday I'm leaving town for a week for work, tonight I put the 8th coat on following a 1k wet sand. If I reinstall the interior tomorrow morning (since the inside is done) I can do coats 9 and 10, push it in the garage since all the interior is back in the truck, let it cure while I'm gone then come back Saturday with 2k wet sand and rubbing compound. Sound good?

Re: Attempting the "$50 paint job"
I would think so, more time to cure isn`t a bad thing.

Re: Attempting the "$50 paint job"
Looks good! If you wanna save even more buy ace hardware brand oil based paint.this is my recipe for the industrial equipment I build, trailers, farm equip ,etc. we mix a 50/50 of paint and thinner,a small amount of hardener and add a few drops of "Japan dryer". Then spray it out of a 20.00 harbor freight gun.usually two coats.its smooth as silk nice and hard,.im seriously thinking about the semigloss that ace sells on my truck.i rolled the inside of the bed to give it the textured look.i love it easy to touch up. As far as the base /clear vs. single stage automotive paint.most beginners will do the base /clear due to being able to fix any poor technique by wet sanding buffing and or respraying.single stage takes more skill to get a good finish with.they both offer the same protection, actually single stage is less likely to peel than clear over color base due to poor adhesion.its all about the prep and product quality.my kid could spray base clear and I could cut and buff it and you'd swear it was a 5 k paint job.that wont fly with single stage.looks awesome !

Re: Attempting the "$50 paint job"
I would wet sand it with some 1500 first... Then see how your base looks. I think the jump from 1000 to 2000 is too much.
This is just my opinion...
