Rad support removal
Just joined the forum and am in the process of swapping my original 350 for a ZZ383 crate engine on my 72 C10 Custom Deluxe. Thought I'd make it 'easy' and remove the front grill, etc. so there would be minimal tilting required. I've got the bolts all out but the rad support rests behind the front fenders slightly. Any ideas on how I get it out? Any tips or tricks for the upcoming swap are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure that's the name of the game on the front end, you pretty much have to take one thing off to get another..lol..cant get rad support off without taking fenders, cant take fenders without front bumper and inner fenders, and hood... pretty sure to remove it you gotta have the whole front clip off.

Seein' that the front fenders are bolted to it... you have to remove those to get the support out.
But... you can leave it all bolted together and remove the bumper, cowl and hood. Then you can unbolt the fenders from the cab and then unbolt the rad support from the frame, and take the whole unit off as one. Just make sure that you have all of the ground straps unkooked and wore harnesses out of the way. Having a couple of buddies to help lift it off is needed too. Gary

It is easier to remove the whole front clip as one unit. I did it by myself with an engine hoist

Great idea Gary! Unfortunately, I've already got the front off and the rad support unbolted from the fenders and frame. Thought I'd try and remove some of the inner fender bolts to see if I have enough play to remove the rad support. Did you say you removed the hood too - cuz the picture shows like its still attached?
I was planning on painting the rad support while it's off. Wish I had the kind of room you have in your garage! It would make things much easier! Thanks again for the tip & pics! Perry Posted via Mobile Device |
