71 cab on newer frame...

Hi, I was wondering if putting a 71 cab on a 86 frame would require lot of mod. I have the frame of my last project that was a 1986 c10, but I was thinking on building older truck and found someone selling the cab of a 71, not sure if the cab brackets of the 86 will work for that cab...

I'm no master welder or anything like that,but I could probably handle that.. I will have to relocate the cab brackets right?

You sure it fits? Brackets looks different and not sure bout the dimensions of one n the other..

The 73-87 frame is raised under the rear of the cab where the 67-72 is flat. If you look at one notice how the floor is raised under seat. This would require some serious floor mods or a body lift/shim for the older cab to sit level. I have seen people do this on a 4X4 where they don't mind a little altitude adjustment but not on a 2wd. At least I have not seen one done anyways.

Exactly, no hassles, no rework welding and someone might even want to buy it when you are done.

i did this probably 15 years ago, maybe more, but from what i can remember you have to cut the cab for the gas tanks and higher frame.i know i used 3/4 ton mounts for the rad and front cab mounts and 1/2 ton for the rear. i believe i did cut the floor and replace the cab corners and cross seal, but im thinking it was because it was rusted out not because it wouldn't fit.

73-87 also has a longer wheelbase, so you would have to do some manipulating to get the wheels centered in the wheel wells.

With a 3" body lift, new cab mount brackets, custom core support mounts, custom front bumper brackets and shorten the wheel base by 4" it can fit.

Or you can reconfigure the under cab to bed transition while you are shortening the wheel base as it hits the back of the 67-72 cab in the stock square body location instead of using the body lift. I did this with my 69 rather than make it sit higher with the body lift.

The second pic shows what not shortening the wheel base looks like.

You are far better off just looking for a whole 67-72 truck to start with.

Same problem I'm facing. Have a 72 gmc long box stepside, 72 Cheyenne 10 shortbox stepside box and a lifted 73 shortbox stepside 4x4 with 11" of suspension lift and 44" boggers. Cab and box on the 73 rotted, frame on the gmc is toast. Would like to swap onto my 4x4 frame. Plus side is no fuel tanks as its on propane that mount under the frame and into the box (2 tanks) any suggestions?
