1971-72 Accelerator Pedal Pin

I have a 1971 Accelerator pedal assembly.
How do I remove the metal Pin that holds the plastic Accelerator Pedal on to the Rod So I can put a new Pedal on?
I tried a punch and a hammer and no joy but I couldnt really apply much striking force.
It seems like it is in there really tight.
Any tips or tricks?

I would like to know also. My wrench could not get it to work and put a bolt in it. The pedal wobbles like a sailor on shore leave.
