stereo question
I am installing a new stereo in my '72 and was wondering if I could wire the rear speakers to the rear outputs and then run the front outputs together to my in dash (mono) speaker?
It seems like it would work, but I don't want to blow the whole thing up.

Can you do it, sure. But it is not advised, and it will probably void your warrenty. You'll have to
ask someone else in an audio forum to give you the details of why it is bad. I know that when you hook the two sides to the same speaker there is a problem with current flowing out one side and into the other side instead of going through the speaker. Which is bad for most stereos. I would just choose one side for the center speaker. Unless you have an extra amplifier with a mono output for the center channel. Then you could use that for the center.

you will need to get either a dual voice coil speaker to put in your dash, or buy one of those little setups that are in some of the truck parts catalogs that have 2 seperate speakers.
If neither are an option, then just hook either the right, or the left output to the speaker. That would work just fine, except it might sound funny when you should have sound coming through only one channel, but you hear it from the front, instead of the side... get what I'm saying?!

Correct me if I am wrong, but can't one positive and one negative(i.e. left front pos. and right front neg.) be hooked to the same speaker to get the full wattage out of the stereo, as well as both right and left channel?

If you are talking about the stock mono dash speaker, trash it. It will sound like crap no matter how you wire it....i have a dual speaker Pioneer setup that i bought that fit right where the stock spearker goes. It sounds great for two little 3" speakers.
