60-66 Hood Hinges
60-66 Cowl Mounted Hood Hinges $265
By Porterbuilt Street Rods It was only a matter of time before we dialed in our cowl mounted hood hinges for the 60-66 C10s. We have been offering a re-locator bracket for the factory hinges for a few years now, but they limited the overall tire diameter to 27”… that kept the wheel selection to a 20” rim. These new cowl mounted hinges will allow the frame-rails to touch-down without tire to hinge clearance issues. The Install is simple and straight forward, and requires some cutting of the cowl panel, welding a mounting pad to the rear hood hinge support, and of course… careful measuring! Here’s a quick installation write up on the hinges… look for a better write-up in the near future! The hinges need to be mounted 45.625” apart (that’s 45 5/8). Find the center-line of the cowl and make a reference mark. There will be mounting hole real close to center where the cowl panel screw mounts. Once the center-line of the cowl has been found, measure out towards the fenders 22.8125” (that’s 22 13/16”) and make a reference mark. This will be the center-line location for the hood hinge pockets. It will be necessary to cut a hole in the cowl so the hinge pocket can be installed. Make sure you leave a small lip on the front of the cowl for strength, and also be careful as the cuts will get close to the wiper mechanism. Make a template of the hinge pocket mounting holes with posterboard or paper and transfer the pattern to the cowl. Drill the holes and cut the slit for the hinge arm. I find it easiest to drill two holes at the top and bottom of the slit and then connect them with a cut-off wheel. Install the hinge pocket and hinge arms (there is a RIGHT and a LEFT side. The bottom of the hinge pockets are angled to follow the slope of the cowl). The pocket will be installed first, and then slide the hinge arm through the slit. Check for clearances and make adjustments where necessary. Install all mounting hardware. Just like our 67-72 hinges, there is a mounting pad that needs to be welded to the hood brace on the underside of the hood. The heat from the weld WILL NOT affect the exterior paint. Just as with the cowl panel, you will need to find the hood brace’s centerline. There are a couple of holes in the brace that will be near dead-center. Make some measurements to verify this. The hood mounting pads’ centerline needs to be the same as the hinge pockets’…45.625” (45 5/8) once centerline is found, make a mark. Measure out 22.8125” (that’s 22 13/16”) and make a reference mark on each side. This reference mark will be the centerline for the hood mounting pads. The back of the mounting pad will measure 1” off the rear edge of the hood brace (see picture below). Verify this measurement to be as close as possible. Careful measuring during this portion of the install will make things much easier! Set the mounting pad in place on the hood, verify measurements, and clean the surface before welding. Tack the pad in place and test fit the hood. Once the mounting location of the hood pads has been verified and test fit, remove the hood and fully weld the pads to the under-hood brace. Install the cowl panel before the hood goes on for the final time. There is ample fore-aft adjustment for the hood to set the gap at the cowl, and there are also shims available (if needed) to adjust the height of the hood at the cowl.

Yes! Awesome Nate. I am currently saving for my dropmember and these are a very necessary addition, what are the brackets on the fire wall?

Re: 60-66 Hood Hinges
Those are the old re-locator brackets for the original hood hinges.

Re: 60-66 Hood Hinges
Porterbuilt,
The stock hinge mechanism lifts the hood upward more than in an arc. Does the stock front hood latch work with this arrangment? Thanks |

Re: 60-66 Hood Hinges
You are correct, the hood swing will be at a different arc than the factory hinged hood.... fortunately, the factory latch and safety catch still works just fine.

Re: 60-66 Hood Hinges
The hood stays open with a prop rod, or man power with this set-up. We will be coming out with a gas assist upgrade that is compatible with these hinges. It will not be the same style as our 67-72 version, as these hoods are just too heavy to be supported that way.
Nate

Can't wait for the upgrade. I feel like I need a nap every time I open my hood

Re: 60-66 Hood Hinges
Is it possible to keep the stock A/C box with these hinges? I'm assuming not because it looks like the left side goes in the same place as the A/C box.
