ok cool. thanks!

i did go back at it for a few hours tonight and i think i figured out the top. i do have #39 and #40 in the diagram but the "flat washer" wasnt flat, it was warped, which is why the bowl could not go on all the way to clip. i hammered it flat, and now it stays!

i still can not pull the lever towards me to move the shifter in the tube..BUT, i think it may have something to do with the rubber and plastic spacer i posted in post #25. i dont see it in the diagram..and have no idea why it would be there if it wast supposed to be. let me know if your columns have that rubber spacer..

the only thing i can think of, is that the rubber spacer is #15 in the pic and its supposed to be between #16 (first reverse shifter) and the gear claw on the shift tube....

Sorry about the delay on this, I have been outside all day working on truck stuff and cleaning the shop. We don't get many days this nice...

Pictures are basically the same with the shift arm in different positions. I labeled the parts in the first picture.

dang, guess it comes back apart to get that off..lol

i wonder where the hell it came from then...? someone must have torn this thing down before

yup..everything else looks exactly the same..i even flipped the lower bearing and case the way you have the picture. it was flipped the other way when i took it apart...but my extra column i have, it wasnt the same in that one..so i figured the bearing was in backwards too.

ill get it apart again tomorrow and pull the spacer and see what happens...

I do have one request when you do a steering column Best off to replace the Rubber cab mounts and the radiator Core mounts they tend to sag over 40 years and that's why your outer lower bearing goes out it puts a ton of unneeded force on them lose bearings.If you do a column DO THE CAB MOUNTS or you will lose that bearing in less then 6 months

that was the problem..the dumb rubber/plastic piece i pulled out. it wasnt letting the shift tube move to shift gears when you pull the lever in. pulled it back apart, removed it, bolted everything up and it shifts! even got the shift linkage bolt connected to the rod, and the shifter bowl to stay put when i shift and use the blinker!

thanks for all the help from you guys, just when you think your column is original or hasnt been taken apart, compare it to one that for sure has not been dis assembled!

No problem, glad you got it working good. Now you can pass the knowledge on when someone else has a problem with their column...
