I did 6 years in the navy. Great experience, but went in never intending to make a career of it. I picked one of the most technical fields they had (nuclear power) and found as many ways as possible to get more schools while in. I went to welding school (emergency nuke piping welder while at sea), HVAC training, machine tools (lathe, milling etc.) quality control training, plus a bunch of other stuff that set me up for a lot of options when I got out.

I operated a 175 MW reactor plant on the boat and now I inspect little cast iron heating boilers.
