Need tire help
So I found out I'm losing my job in 6 months (damn Indians) which means I'm losing my company car. I need to get my truck as DD friendly as possible, I've got a K10 on what I believe is a 4" lift, currently on 35" mud kings. Any suggestions for a good A/T tire and size?

Re: Need tire help
your lucky to get a 6 month notice of losing your job, I only got a 1 minute warning in 2010 when I lost my job.
Get some 33x12.50 general grabber AT2's or BFG's http://www.generaltire.com/tires/lig...uv/grabber-at2

Very lucky. A business decision that I'm sure is illegal here in the US is Eliminating 1,500 jobs, but that's what you can do when you locate headquarters in lawless Mexico thanks for the advice.

Re: Need tire help
Here's my take:
Think about your driving habits and locations: Do you do much on the highway or is it more around town? Are your local roads prone to having standing water on them, or does your local weather often lead to heavy rain that creates surface water on your roads while you drive? (IE here in atlanta-area heavy rain often creates 1" deep water on the highway while you drive, at least a couple times a month) If you want a highway-friendly tire that will not see a whole lot of off-road use I like the Michelin LTX M/S2... its pricey, but has exceptional wet traction, about the best out there in that regard. Having said that, most of my driving is highway and in that wet weather since we don't see much snow in Atlanta. A cheaper option and second best from my research was the General Grabber HTS for that type of tire. Other options would be something more snow friendly, but, my take on things is this - you have the 35s for your all-terrain needs already, why not get a cheap set of factory rims, buy a fuel-friendly and higher-mileage rated tire for your on-road monday-friday periods, and switch between them as the need arises based on what you choose to do? If a less aggressive and smaller diameter tire saves you 2 mpg, then in a 20 gallon tank thats 40 miles worth. Given you probably get 16mpg tops in that rig, thats 2.5 gallons a tank, or, at $4/gallon on the horizon/average, about $10 per tank in savings. $400 on the second set of tires and rims paid for itself in 40 tanks of gas... If you're like me, and use a tank per week or more, that gets paid off in maybe 9 months or so? Last edited by 79 silverado; 10-11-2012 at 11:28 PM. |

Re: Need tire help
Good looking truck, sorry to hear about your job... I daily drove mine for two years after my company truck went away and had 32" BFG AT's the whole time. They do well in the rain, OK in the snow and have worn very well.

Re: Need tire help
I do live by a pull a part, I could get some rims cheap. I'll probably be driving at least 35min one way into Knoxville. I've also got a quadrajet, think I should get it rebuilt and put it on?

Quote:
A well-tuned q-jet is efficient, but, it is important to get ahold of one that was originally jetted for your application. Three 600cfm q-jets can give varying mileage on the same engine, because at the factory the rods inside them will be tailored to the specific application - thus why you see so many part numbers in a given model year on q-jet carbs. The advantage of a q-jet over a holley, again in my opinion, comes because of how it operates in that at a low/partial throttle the secondaries do not open - essentially it acts like a 2bbl carb that transforms into a 4bbl when you ask for it. If your driving style, and the set up of your rig through its rear end gearing, result in a heavier foot where you are getting into the secondaries often the q-jet advantage is negated. Conversely, if your driving style, or the fuel demands to get-up-and-go in your rig based on the rpm it needs to turn to make power (as dictated by its rear end gearing) leave you seldom opening up the secondaries then a q-jet can pick up a couple mpg. Guys who complain about q-jets not being as good, or not seeing the "supposed fuel mileage gain" are usually those who think it is inherently a fuel saver, except that in reality it is not - it is all depending how you drive. A guy who drives around with his foot in the throttle enough to regularly crack open those big ol secondaries on a q-jet may actually see a little better mileage with a holley... |

Re: Need tire help
I was really just more curious as to what size I should run, it's currently a 35x12.5x15.

Re: Need tire help

do you plan on removing lift kit?

Re: Need tire help
I don't know my ratio exactly, It think a 3.42. I don't wanna remove the lift, that would involve buying new springs for the front.

Re: Need tire help
Where will you be driving? sticking with a 35 will keep the r's down on the highway and going with something smaller will give you better mileage and more pep around town. I run 35s with 3.73s (no OD) and see about 2500 rpm on the highway at 65. Ive been loyal to the BFG all terrain for a while too, had some yokohama geolander a/t's that I liked also but I don't think they're made anymore.

Re: Need tire help
33x10.50 will help a little with the gas without looking like street biscuits.
