Question on turning a c-10 into a convertible

do you need to do any bracing in cab before you cut the roof off and will you run into trouble with door not closing in the future?? Thanks for the help

Re: Question on turning a c-10 into a convertible

You have to have some type of bracing to support the floor of the cab. It would slowly fold across the floor and you would have problems with the doors shutting then.

No they didn't. All convert trucks (except mid 90's Dodge Dakota) were aftermarket done by conversion companies or the owners themselves.

And about the bracing, I would definately brace the cab...you will have issues once the top is cut off....maybe not immediately, but definately over time.

Re: Question on turning a c-10 into a convertible

Absolutely! The cab roof is an integral part of the body structure. Take it away and eventually the rest will sag.

I suggest bracing across the back of the cab behind the seats, and a double tube running between the seats to the front floorboard.

This would offer minimal support, but be the least obtrusive.

Re: Question on turning a c-10 into a convertible

when i did mine i used a piece of tubing fitted into the cut on the back of the cab then i had the roll bar made (which is only plated and welded to the floor, so its not truly a safety feature) the roll bar is welded to the tubing in the back of the cab and also to the side of the cab behind the seat. the roll bar also goes to the front of the seat on the outsides and almost to the dash in the center.i also left the windshield in untill all the welding was done to the upper portion, and i just had a new one installed and there were no issuses. if you want pics let me know

Re: Question on turning a c-10 into a convertible

I say leave it and start a new project truck to make a convertible.

I am not sure on the bracing though.. Obviously it won't hurt anything to brace it, but what about full convertible blazers? Do they suffer problems? I have also been around convertible Jeeps most of my life and dont hear problems with them. Just curious.

Jon, convert Blazers have extra floor supports under them and are reinforced in the door jamb area.

Correct. On my 72 blazer the braces run parrallel to the frame and I believe they are called torque boxes. If you didn't know what they were for you would mistake them as an unnecessary obtrusion. As a matter of fact, alot of them were cut off back in the day for auxillary gas tanks. Those that weren't usually rusted in this area.

Re: Question on turning a c-10 into a convertible

and also you have other body mounts to help hold the body. on a reg cab you have front and back mounts only i think. could be wrong. but i say leve that truck alone it is bad ass. and i am not a fan of converts trucks at all. but thats just me
