5.7 vortec into my 77 truck?

Hello I'm new to this but was checking it out and see a lot of good help on here. I have a 77 pick up I've been building as an off road truck. The truck is pretty stout itself but after a recent trip to the hills I did like how my carbureted sb 400 cut out on the hills and rocks. I picked up a 5.7 vortec last year with the factory harness, computer and all. I would like to put the top end from it on my 400 since its a fresh block and runs strong. I know i need to drill the steam holes in the heads. Far as the factory harness can i use it? And just flash the computer I have? Anyone have some tips or problems I might run into?

The Vortec fuel injection system is a single injector system with a spider of tubes to feed each cylinder. While good for the trucks they came in, I would not go through the trouble of swapping and programming one as a way to get EFI.

Your best bet is to go with a EFI intake that fits your motor. The Edelbrock Victor EFI is a good choice, but there are many other options as well.

From there, you can choose a computer to run it all. If you want to run factory GM, the LS1 computer can be adapted to older engines which gives you the LS1 coil pack ignition as well. http://www.eficonnection.com/eficonnection/default.aspx

There's also many aftermarket injection systems, and even the open source Megasquirt.

My advice would be to sell the complete Vortec 350 and all associated parts to someone who's looking for one. Take that money and invest in a good EFI system.

First off let's figure out for sure which vortec you have first. Know what year the engine is?

Ok, any 96 later Vortec engine is what you want.
Slap on a dual plane intake, nice carb, distributor, and mechanical fuel pump. Swap the cam out for real power gains.

Thank you that helps! Yes I really like it as well. Had a 99 suv with one in it, it ran like a raped ape for years with little problems.
