3 on the tree shifter

I haven't had the chance to fully research this yet...just a quickie question post while I'm on break at work.. My 60 GMC has the three speed column shift. I found a cool shift knob, but to install it I would have to cut the shifter handle doohickey and I don't want to do that. I was thinking about taking it out so I can copy it. How difficult is that? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: 3 on the tree shifter

Don't know about that, but here is a tip I learned when mine had the 3 on the tree. They grind quite a bit when you first put them into first. Try putting it in 3rd, and then put it in first after that, and it will just fall into gear, no grinding.

Re: 3 on the tree shifter

20 years ago I made one out of stainless because mine broke. I did it on a lathe and then bent it to match. The end that goes into the column is tapered with a ball on the end, and seems like it had two flats on it. Worked and looked great, but it was too soft and gradually started to bend at the tapered point.
