cutting hole at botton of door for speakers

this dosnt effect the window track or Anything? could you add more than one in a row at the bottom of door? and how does the factory radio come out?

Hate to try to intervene, but cutting the door really hurts the doors potential for future restoration. I wouldnt do it Save frustration for a future owner. Buy some kick panels with speakers.

x2 on cutting holes. But if you must, there is room to mount speakers from one end to the other without interfering with the window, unless you have really deep cones. The radio comes out by removing one sheet metal screw from a securing strap that connects to the rear of the head unit under the dash. Then you need to remove the post nuts and knobs, and unplug the antenna cable, and it should be loose. It might take a little maneuvering to push it back, rotate the face down towards the floor, and then drop it down behind the dash to the floor.

You can build a lower door panel, its pretty easy to do I might even have some pics to help you along and you can screw it to the door. Then you only have a couple of small holes to fix the a large hole in the future.

That's not a bad idea, I would like to see some pics if you have a moment to post them. I even considered another set of speakers since they are already there.

Ok first you need to make a backing board...this will be against the door, 1/4 or 3/8 HDF board is the best to use but it can be hard to find sometimes but it is very strong and flexible. 1/2 to 3/4 MDF or particle board works good also. You can use cardboard to make a template this will save wood if you screw up, and you want to make the backing board about 1/8 to 1/4 smaller the wwhole way around depending on what your going to cover it in..vinal or carpet. And you need a template for your speaker....and 1/4 board will work just take your speaker surround that the grill fits into and trace it on to the 1/4 board and cut it out but add about 1/8 to 1/4 to the outside line.

Now you mount the template to the backing board....I use a short and a long piece of scrap wood this will let you aim the speaker in the direction you want.....Look at the pics below to see close up of this.. Now you need some grill cloth I think radio shack or bestbuy might carry it or you can order it and its cheap I used red cause it was left over from a project I did before....color doesnt matter thou. You streach the grill cloth over the top and staple it to the backing board you want it really tight and if you get some folds or seams just pull the staples out and keep stretching it if you cant get them all out its ok cause you can hide them later.

Now that you got the grill cloth on you need some fiber glass resin and some fiberglass mat.....I cut the mat into 3"x3" squares and some 2"x6" pieces first so there ready......first mix up some resin and have some cheap paint brushs I use 2" ones that are a buck a piece and put a light coat over the grill cloth, now this will take some time to dry but after it drys but anouther coat on and start laying your mat over top of it and keep appling resin over the mat layer by layer.....2 or 3 layers is good..and wear some rubber gloves when using this stuff and then let it dry for a good day. When its good and dry and hard sand the resin with some 80 to 100 grit sandpaper to knock off any strands of fiber and runs from the resin and you want to scratch it up so the puddy has something to bond to.....so after sanding blow it off and wipe it off with a damp rag and once the water dries you can but some body puddy on it and get it smooth then sand.....if using vinal you need it really smooth if using carpet you dont have to be real particular cause the carpet hides alot. These take some time to make cause of all the drying time but your speakers will sound better and it saves your doors. I will try and find some more pics and post them for you but if you have any Q's go ahead and ask.

That is the exact method I used for my rear panels, it worked great for my 6-1/2" speakers in the front and the subs in the rear. Nice Job man

where did you get the fiberglass resin and fabric and the wooden rings?i wanna learn fiberglass work so bad. that would open me up to so many more projects

I got mine at Lowes, their fabrics seemed easier to work with, in my opinion. I cut my rings out with a jig saw

You need to surf the Internet a little and do some research on it before you tackle it, that is what I did and it helped a bunch.

There is hardener for it and a specific ratio, also a certain amount of working time before you it starts to harden in your cup

The fiberglass resin I've used in the past is a 2 part epoxy resin. So basically the same rules as epoxy. The matting is the actual fiberglass, the resin provides structure and hold the layers together. Carbonfiber is essentially the same thing except the weeve is made from strands of carbon instead of glass (silica).

There is also the method of carving the "mold" out of rigid foam (not Styrofoam because the resin will melt it into a big pile of goo, it's more like florist foam) and once it drys you just scoop all the foam out and you end up with a pure fiberglass shell of the shape. This is how all those funky one off cars from the 60s were made.
