Custom under bed Fuel cell ?'s

Has anyone made their own under bed Fuel cell for their stepside? I am looking into making one like the ones on summit. Does anyone have any dimensions of their under bed Fuel cell?

Re: Custom under bed Fuel cell ?'s

Lance,

Dont know how much trouble you are wiling to go to, but I used an Aeromotive 20 gallon cell. 24"x20"x10" deep.

It definately wasnt a drop in affair, but I used Early Classics rear x-member that goes in flush with the end of the frame rails. I had to build a flange for the cell and then a frame to mount it to the frame rails. I also had to remove some of the lower flange on the angled x-member behind the rear axle.

A slightly smaller cell would have been easier & it also hangs pretty low. I would have gone another route if I didnt already have the cell from another project.

Do some searching here, there is a member that builds a nice cell that addresses most of the issues I ran into.

Hope this helps,
Shane

I just mounted a 40 Gal suburban tank under the bed of my 71 4x4 long bed,,was not that much trouble as I cut all the cross members out of the Suburb and mounted them where the stock spare tire mounts,,turned out nice and now have 40 gallons to feed the Big block monster,,there is a thread going with video's I posted.

I'm in the planning stages of doing exactly that. Like Shane mentioned, mine will be basically 24"x"20"x10". I will have a rear sump with -8AN fittings so I can hook up to an external fuel pump. Also going to install either a fuel door or maybe the marker light filler modification.

Re: Custom under bed Fuel cell ?'s

Thanks guys,

I am just trying to weigh my options of wether I should shell out the money for a pre made one or make one.
Critter, I am thinking of doing something similar to you and Shane, I am just trying to figure out the exact configuration I want to go with.

Why would you need a fuel cell instead of a tank?

This works.. although I don't really like how far it sits down to be able to have the fill tube through the license plate.

I am modifying it to use a side fill through the side reflector.

Tom,

I suspect we are getting into semantics here. I would actually call what I used an aluminum tank. A true fuel cell will at most basic at least have a safety bladder inside of it.

My reasoning was based on my needs for the tank. I can do some mild fabrication so starting with something close was my best option. I also wanted to move the tank from the cab as the stocker was leaking. I also wanted something that had an electric in-tank pump for the EFI I will be running.
