Re: How fast does everyone cruise on the highway in their truck?
Another reason/reasons I have for staying at or below the posted limit is that pretty much all my old trucks are better suited for mild offroading than racing down the highway!!! Besides I am always more relaxed just loafing along, you can scan the countryside for old parts squares that way too....

Re: How fast does everyone cruise on the highway in their truck?
Sorry to hear about the gas shortage. I live in FL, Trust me gas is first thing to go when storms are on the Horizon! In fact most stations still run out of gas before stores run out of groceries. Should gone with cheap Harbor freight Solar Panels
My 86 1500 usually cruises OK at 55. Turbo 350 trans no overdrive... Gets a lil loud up around 70!!! Here in FL no emissions restrictions, you know what that means. Straight pipes, with just some glasspacks! |

I sometimes drive cars with either 4.56 or 4.88 gears and no overdrives, even 55 mph is screaming with a 28" tire. That's even too slow on some of the backroads for people around here They are either socker moms or just too young to know why I'm driving the speed I am. You would have had to own a classic car to understand. Sad that alot of society today missed out on that. |

Actually, I remember looking at a brochure from 1972(?) advertising the "new aerodynamic design".

Re: How fast does everyone cruise on the highway in their truck?
Yeah, the flat front design idea was used in nascar in the 60's and considered better than what they had previously. Dodge experimented with it on the Charger 500 front ends in 69 with coronet body parts, then sold more than 500 of them to homologate it. It's the same car the nose cones and wings went on which was also homologated and used until Nascar outlawed them, and the rest is history.

Re: How fast does everyone cruise on the highway in their truck?
I like to keep my truck around 60 mph, it does about 2200rpm with a 31" tire and 3.08's. Figured out about 16 mpg that way. Not bad for a 350 with shot rings!

Re: How fast does everyone cruise on the highway in their truck?
No more than 65mph. i think speed is more important than rpm when we are concerned about mpg; For example i would rather go 55 @ 2200 rpm than 70mph @ 1800 rpm
Other facets concerning mpg i would like to discuss eventually and in other threads: 1) Either switching to diesel or moving way down on cubes---and being prepared for an immediate and drastic reduction in accelerational ability. 2) Actually saving money on gas first on foremost before touching anything on the truck; For example, there was a gas card from exxon that gave .15 cents off the sign price. Unfortunately, they have just discontinued it last month but that is an example of ways to save on the actual price gas. 3) Aerodynamics is big area for mpg improvement. |

Re: How fast does everyone cruise on the highway in their truck?
i believe mine has 2.73:1 - 3.0:1 gears. It was so close looking at the drive shaft and the wheel idk what i actually have but 55 shes got rpms of 1500, and 60-65 shes up to 1950 rpms. I have a lock up TH350 and i cruise 65 mph and it sticks to 2000 rpms. Gets pretty good gas mileage, drove it 44 miles on a half tank, remember c10s only have 16 gallon tanks

Re: How fast does everyone cruise on the highway in their truck?
I average around 16-17mpg on the highway with my nv3500 on 235/75/15s, IIRC 65mph @ 2000-2500 5th gear i think.. I haven't driven on the highway recently due to driveline shake.

Re: How fast does everyone cruise on the highway in their truck?
that was a wild guess. guess i have to get a tune up if im getting 5.5 miles to a gallon or i miss judged how far i went from my home town to a different county. i really dk the miles i just guess because i believe it was 20 miles there and back. but i do have a lingering gas smell thats bothering me, if i cruise at 65 at 2000 rpms, whats causing the 5.5 mpgs?

Re: How fast does everyone cruise on the highway in their truck?
I usually drive a little slower than normal to save gas...55mph is the fastest I go...sometimes 60. Its just horrible on gas...I want to cruise it more and take it to other places other than just around my little town...cant wait to do my 5.3 swap

Re: How fast does everyone cruise on the highway in their truck?
Couldn't hardly push people to go past 65 in the carpool and fast lane here in Washington very agrovating when people don't move over and stay out of the hammer lane if they are only going to match the speed of the person next to them. Washington has some of the most simple minded and idiotic drivers around. I took my truck down to Utah for vacation once and everybody drives 80. And traffick jams clear in two minutes. They know what's going on highway wise. But are utards in the city lol.
I honestly think when I have to travel in the city behind a Sunday driver going 25 in a 35 or 35 in a 45 around here it's killing more has than necassary I'm at 3000rpm on the highway at 70 eats fuel at 11mpg on the hwy. I'm sure I can stretch to 18mpg with an overdrive and a lighter truck with tonneu cover Posted via Mobile Device

Re: How fast does everyone cruise on the highway in their truck?
I usually do the speed limit, which is 65 in most places. But since I live in Atlanta, moving quickly is required. Highway driving between 70-85 and I get 12-13 mpg. City driving is between 12-14 mpg. I have 350, TH400 and 3.73s. I want to upgrade my drivetrain...I drive my truck for fun, so I do not worry about it too bad.
Next up is either a new 500hp 383 Stroker and a new built TH400 with an overdrive setup or same motor with a built t56. That should do it! Posted via Mobile Device

Re: How fast does everyone cruise on the highway in their truck?
Just cruised the Texas toll road for about 20 miles at 80 MPH. Truck ran great!! I could see the gasneedle going down!! Nearly 35 miles at high speed used almost 1/4 tank!! I'll putting on the tonneau cover for the 85 MPH run to San Antonio!! 41 miles at 85 MPH hour. I had to use a GPS device to read speed. Going 80 with GPS put the stock needle above 85 MPH. Earlier in the day, GPS marked a top speed of 101 MPH!!

Might be different if people paid attention, didn't get so impatient with others, and actually drove with a little sense. Like I said though, they all act like their asses are on fire. I don't mind cruising at 75-80 if I have a car capable, but I also don't expect to get great gas mileage while doing that either. Most cars I have will go 65 tops at 3,000 rpms, and some are pushing it at 55 mph at 3,000 rpms or even more. I won't spin the engine at 4500 rpms just to please a few speed demons. So they just have to find a way around |

yeah don't trust the fuel gage if I fill mine up it wont move for a week then all of a sudden it will drop to half a tank then down to empty. I just put 10 bucks in mine this morning was on 1/8 of a tank and now its over half with 3 gallons of gas. gearing is a huge factor in fuel economy I plan on going to another 3.42 set here soon its the best mix for economy and power I have found with a 3 speed transmission
