sandblasting quote
I got a quote of $1200 to do the entire body of my 65 short fleet less frame if I disassemble it completley and bring it to them, does this seem high or normal?
hood, 2 fenders, 2 cowl extensions, cowl panel, grill support, 2 doors, cab, 2 bed sides, head board, tailgate, 2 rear wheel humps and probably a small box of small parts.

Re: sandblasting quote
I don't know how much different the cost of living is up there, but I had the body and frame blasted about two months ago here for 550 after tax, the f*rd dealership here does it, I would definately check around if there are other places available.

Re: sandblasting quote
$1200 is too high. I'm not sure how many blasters you have locally in your part of Maine, but I would definitely shop around. $700/$800 is usually the norm.
How much rust is on your truck? That will often determine what media the blaster will use. Soda is nice, but it won't tackle rust. Walnut shells are easier on flat panels than most other media, but they won't knock out heavy scale rust. A lot of shops will use Black Beauty, which is coal slag, and it's kind of an all-purpose media. If it's a professional shop, they'll know what media to use. After that, you have to hope that the guy with the blast equipment knows how to use it. Some guys are much better than others.

Re: sandblasting quote
That sounds high if he's just blasting it. Our local guy charges $80/hour and that includes all soda/sand used. The last car he did for us was a completely disassembled '66 Mustang and he charged $1200 (15 hours) to do everything inside and out, but he also cleaned it down and sprayed epoxy that we supplied.

Re: sandblasting quote
I got the same quote from 2 places now, one uses plastic media on paint and coal slag on rust, the other says he uses sponge? I have never heard of that before.

Re: sandblasting quote
About $700 around Boise, Idaho. A couple of high end body shops I know of use sand, but you do have to be very careful about not warping it.

Re: sandblasting quote
I don't expect them to use sand, its just a way of getting my point across as to what I'm looking to have done, I expect soda or walnut shell to be the norm.

Re: sandblasting quote
I operate a machine/fab shop in Alabama and I did mine here. I disassembled it at home and brought all the pcs in to work. We used Black Beauty - fine grit and it took a good while to do. Of course I didn't have to pay for mine but I wouldn't do one for less than $1200.00. I'm sure there are people that do but I couldn't make any money doing one for less. And don't believe the nonsense about sand warping panels. It's not the sand, it's the operator.

Re: sandblasting quote
I have found stuff like blasting, chroming, and ESPECIALLY powder coating costs way more up in New England. I have a pressure blaster and use fine silica or crushed glass. It's a dirty job and not fun. My sandblaster has paid off in spades for many different projects. You can blast a Harley frame in about 1/2 hour, sand it with some 320 grit and it's ready to paint or powder coat. You may want to look at buying a blaster. I sand all the panels bare with a DA sander and just blast the hard to get spots and you do need to be careful to avoid warpage.

Just got my 3rd quote, I guess $1200 is the going rate around here. This guy uses fine crushed glass.

Re: sandblasting quote
I paid $1350 that was for my entire 1964 c 10 short bed. I choked at first but expertise and skills you pay for. Cab, fenders, doors, front box panel, bed sides, hood cowl, tail gate and fender tubs and misc parts. The soda blaster I used had a resume of thousands of cars and trucks. He did work for shops and everyone. California, Nevada, Arizona. He also knew where the weak spots are on our trucks. Also there is another alternative, Chemical dipping. Don't know the costs involved or pricing.

Re: sandblasting quote
You get what you pay for I just had mine done the entire truck was soda blasted remember soda doesn't remove rust so then I had it glass beaded and had over 1500 in it but remember they can do more damage if they are not experienced at body panels.

WOW!
My friend that owns an blasting business charges $40.00 per hour. I keep telling him he needs to bump his prices a little. Do those guys re-use their crushed glass?
