Took my truck to the mechanics, guess what was wrong?!? MORE FRIKKIN WATER IN THE GAS TANK!!!! I guess the weatherstripping around the deck plate didn't cut it, plus I didn't have the gas cap locked down because it was sticking. A couple other thing were wrong too.
**Jeff take note!**
Since I had moved the gas tank from inside the bed to beneath the bed, the fuel pump was having to do more work (no gravity feed), went from a 14 psi pump to an 18 psi pump, nice and loud! It needed replacing anyways from all the water.
Plus, the timing was waaaay off, almost completely advanced so the computer was fighting to slow the truck down.
So, new pump, filter, and a 5th rebuild on the TBI, along with correct timing and corrected shift points on the tranny, the truck was running better than it ever had! I was driving around on cloud nine! Then today it started running crappy again. Then worse.
Ran it back by the mechanic just now, they hooked it up to the computer, everything checked fine except the engine was running very lean. I asked if it could be more water, mechanic #1 said no way since they completely drained the system. Mechanic #2 says "wait, isn't there foam in the cell?"
So, for the foreseeable future I'm going to have to run a lot of HEET and drain the fuel filter daily until I can get all the water out of the foam and the cell. No fun, but at least I know what's wrong!

I will be sure to have the cap on tight! Do you think my new Holley mech pump with regulator will be sufficient for my install?

Way to go!! I'm guessing it's a relief to finally get it figured out, eh? It's like any other problem - not knowing WHAT the problem is is often more frustrating than trying to fix it once you find out what it is.

Did that make sense??? :p

I suppose, I basically had to go 5 psi higher than usual for TBI, you might need to do something relatively similar for your carb.
I'm going to be replacing the weatherstripping under the deck plate with black silicone tomorrow morning, should seal it up a lot better. I had to start using WD-40 on the actual gas cap to put it on, then my Dad gave me some O-ring lube meant for pool systems. It's been working great and won't dry out the seal.

BTW, for all you guys suggesting an O2 sensor, the mechanic said I probably need to install a Corvette O2 sensor. Something about it running faster or hotter, not sure, but I'll look into it.

Corvettes used Heated 02 sensors. It just doesn't have to use the heat from the exhaust to warm it up to operating temp. Before it is warm the computer uses default values (just like it has been for the last, what 7 years right) O2 definitley isn't a problem, but it might save you a few mpg's....

That is good to hear. I'm glad you got it figured out. Sometimes, we all have to get another view of the problem. I know for me, my mind goes into overdrive with problems like this. After awhile, I feel like driving it off a damn cliff.

Like my 87 van. It's really ticking me off too. For a strange reason that I don't know what it is, the battery will very slowly drain down. About once a month, it will die on me. Brand new battery too. I've checked everything and can't find nothing that should be causing it.

Oh well. Anyway, great news Greg.

Why don't you just put a water filter on there? Will a diesel/water seperator work with gasoline?

Glad to see you figure that one out Greg. Hate to hear that the mechanic cost more than you wanted to spend but at least you got it going good. Hopefully you can get it finally fixed right and not letting water in there.

As for the Corvette Oxygen Sensor...simply go ask for an Oxygen Sensor for a 91 Chevy 3/4-ton G20 Van (with the 350 TBI motor), make sure to get the BOSCH one. I can't remember the # right off hand, but it's $19 and it's what I (and everyone I can think of) uses to tune their cars (Because we've all made narrow-band O² Sensors using it. It's NOT heated.)
