Question for those with Tachs installed - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I bought a Summit tach and am trying to figure the best place to mount it. I've seen some on the dash in the corner by the speaker and some on the column. For the ones in the corner on the dash, is it in the way of the inspection/registration sticker?

What are your thoughts?

mine would be in the way of the sticker, but i dont have inspections here

i put my tach in the corner because i'll be replacing the dash anyway. its just a cover on it now.

I did notice yours Eric. I like the way it looks it just appeared like when the sticker has to be replaced on mine, that position might be in the way. Plus, not sure if I want to screw into my dash because mine is in good shape.

yeah, if you put it there, it WOULD be in the way. and like i said, it doesnt matter to me about the holes right now since i'm replacing the dash anyways. i'll probably set up my dash the way mike has his

If I was to mount a non-in dash tach I would mount it to the top of the column or slightly off to the side on the column.
Easy to see there and doesnt stick out as much as a on dash mounted tach.

Trouble with mounting tachs on the column of an auto column shifted truck is the tach will spin when you move the shifter. There's not enough room to mount it to where it wouldn't move. No way am I mounting a tach on my dash either.

I know of the perfect place for it.

I need to start fixing all you guys gauges like mine. I could make a pretty good living.

Seriously, I have thought about it. I wonder if I could sell completed gauge bezels on ebay.

As a temporary mounting place, I have mine at the very top of the cab pillar, right under the visor, yet I can't use the visor now.....

Mike, you CAN mount them on the column of an automatic equipped truck, here is a pic of the tach in the Woody, I also had this tach in Yeller...both automatic trucks. There isn't much room, but it can be done without any problems.

Also Mike, I doubt it would be financially beneficial to produce them...unless you sold them without the gauges. Not only that, but you have a unique and sweet setup...do you really want more of them out there?

mine is in the same place as bigblock73's and it doesnt move, now you cant move your wheel up much, but i never moved mine to get out anyways. set mine slightly to the right just covers up the idiot lights...

Thanks guys! I like it on the column because it can be seen well and you can't see it from the outside of the truck. I don't have a mounting strap (didn't come with one), so I'll have to find something that will work. That's about the only obvious place to put it since it's so big. Yeah Cochino12, mine's way too big to put there.

Mine's in the same place as Jeff's. It's a 3.75" Autometer AutoGuage that I picked up for $70.

Or one big one from Home Depot or Menards...and you can paint it black to blend with the column.

Scott- Look in the dryer vent sections at HD. You probably need a 4" diameter dryer hose clamp.

mine is on my column, but it's only a 2.75" tach. Looks good, is out of the way of all of my gauges, and i mounted it with the screw that came with it. It's only a $30 sunpro tach, but it matches the inside of my truck and it looks really good. I have tilt wheel & everything works fine. I'll take a pic of it later today when I get home from work.

A friend of mine actually mounted his on the shifter housing. When in drive, it was dead center, like Jeff's. When in park, it was of course tilted over to the left. It worked well, he had it that way for years. Just something else to think about....
