Centering axles in openings

I am doing an axle flip on my 1949 3600 and remember reading an article about moving the axle back X amount to center the wheels on the openings.

Of course I did not save the article.......and cannot find it.

Any help?

i think its 1.5 inches

Pretty close to that. If you still have the old axle flip it over and measure the distance from the center of the locating hole in the spring perch pad to the center of the axle housing.
It's either 1-1/2 or 1-3/4 but it's been a long time since I did one with stock springs.

mine was 1.5, but before I burned in the sadles ( changed to a 10 bolt ) I mocked evrything up loose and droped it on the floor to get a good "static" look at everything. When the axle moves up and down, it will also move back with the shackle. Not enough to worry about with the big fenders on the A.D. trucks, but something to think about when looking at it or when trying to stuff 37 inch tires into a stock rear wheel well on a 1986 Toyota 4runner with a mild lift

I have not been able to find any info on a 3600 though. All the info I have found is for 3100. Looking at pictures, the 3600 is more centered from the factory.

It will move a bit back naturally when I do the flip.....but like Newfisher mentioned I have plenty of room.

Here is one and a half inch to the rear with 255 70 15 tires

Whoa, hold the wagon, We were all on the mindset of 3100's with the torque tubes. I'm thinking that the 3600 has a regular driveshaft.

If it doesn't have a torque tube with a pivot that sets that 1-1/2 inches in front of the axle it's self you need to have the hole in the spring perche that locates the axle match the original hole on the the original spring perch.

to centre your axle using old springs , undo springs and turn them 180 degrees thereby repositioning original spring perches back about 2 inches reattatch to hangers and check it out (just thinkin it may work)
