How many members are VW guys
I know of a few of us on here... They just keep popping up
My car life started with a 69 Beetle that I bought 34 years ago, and yes its still sitting in the front of my garage. I redid it twice and was actually working on it the third time when I bought a 2wd Jimmy, then it got pushed into the corner, where it still sits in the same condition, primer.... I have since bought a couple more, a 55 Canadian oval, was going to get the full "Porsche" treatment, but then I bought Gringos Blazer, so that got put out to pasture literally, then I bought the last one, a 68 Turbo type 4 Beetle. the 68 was complete running and all I had to do was drive it. It has been a blast being able to get back behind a Bug again, especially one with a little boost to it. I know there are a bunch of us VW guys on here, but it seems I always come back to the 67 72 's. Whats your story??

Re: How many members are VW guys
I "was" a VW guy through the '70s since I first started driving. My first car was a '56 bug. I fixed it up and did all the European touches. It took till after HS for me to finally paint it. I chose Mercedes Medium Blue. This was in '73,I believe. The only pictures on the computer are these from when I pulled it out of my parent's barn when I got back from CA in '77:

Re: How many members are VW guys
I started out with VW. Dad and I built a dune buggy in 69 for my first car. Fiberglass body, T top and all. Loved that thing. Kept it about 7 years. I'll see if I can find a pic of it.
I still like the bugs and if the shop were bigger I might buy another one. 66 to 72s were my favorite. I helped my girl friend buy her first car, a 67 VW. Her first vehicle was a 67 Chevy truck. She's my kind of girl. We've been together now for 41 years.

Re: How many members are VW guys
I had three, a '61, a 66 and a '74 Super. They were fun to drive and got pretty good mileage. I towed the '74 Super Bettle behind our motorhome.

Re: How many members are VW guys
I have a 1-owner (me) gold '74 limited edition super beetle convertible "sunbug" - special gold paint, black top, chocolate brown interior, special wheels. I later added a set of Empi Sprint wheels & also kept the stock "sport" wheels. I bought it new May 1974, & it now has about 74,000 miles on it.
It's fairly rare; I've been told that only 500 were made & 300 sold in US & 200 in Europe, but haven't been able to verify those numbers. I've only ever personally seen 5 - 6 of these gold convertibles besides mine, and have seen photos of about a dozen others or so. They made lotsa beetle & super-beetle sedan sunroof-sunbugs, but not a lot of convertibles. They were probably just too expensive for the day: mine was just over $ 4100 off the showroom floor. Same story tho: just because it's "rare" today, doesn't make it especially valuable. My guess: reallistically, probably worth about $ 7500 - 8500 or so; lotsa people have tried to buy it, and I still own it .......... Here's a photo before the Empi wheels & before I changed to a replaced right rear fender (where my wife backed it into a truck bumper). Terrible blind-spots in these things. |

Re: How many members are VW guys
I used to be a VW guy, I still like em, just haven't had one for ages. First engine I ever rebuilt was on the living room floor for my 66 bug.
I was working on picking up a 60's dune buggy and the deal kept falling through. I wanted something kind of different so I bought my panel and put way too much dough in to it. Soon after the guy with the dune buggy called me, we struck a deal. Course by that time I was way to deep money wise in the panel so the dune buggy just sat in the barn. Couple years later I sold it back to the fella I bought it from. Boy do I wish that whole fiasco would have turned out differently lol. Buggy would have been done and I would have been a ton of money ahead.

I used to have a red '74 Beetle. I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for the Bugs. I might still own one one day.

Re: How many members are VW guys
Hey Mark, you could have built a couple buggies for what you put just into the BLACK paint!!
I built my first Beetle engine in my spare bedroom, then carried out the long block by myself to the unheated garage...

Re: How many members are VW guys
My wife scanned a pic of my dune buggy circa 1971 or 72. That's a good friend's 66 Vette there also. We are parked on the levee on the Mississippi river just above main street Helena.

Re: How many members are VW guys
I'm one, I have an original paint '64 Sunroof that's my daily driver, a '66 that's halfway restored, and a '71 stalled project car. I'm building a 200+ hp 2276cc with a knife edged/lightened/polished forged CB crank, CB CNC wedgeports and IDA's for the '64. Dad has a restored '57 oval.
90hp 115tq 1679cc in my '64.

Re: How many members are VW guys
some nice cars here! I'm not surprised you had a bus tim. lol I have wanted a baja bug for a long time but haven't found the right one at the right time. I have a friend with a stroked motor in a tube chassis sand rail, it carries the front tires and plants you in the seat, and sounds amazing!

Re: How many members are VW guys
My Buggy. It's the only VW that I've ever owned.
1600, mild cam, ported heads, Bugpack intake, Progressive Weber carb, 009 distributor, High energy coil, Tri-Mil exhaust, external oil cooler, external oil filter, breather box, close ratio gears, super diff, KYB gas shocks, Mickey Thompson Baja tires, and a set of paddles for out at the dunes. It's a fun little car. Very reliable, and a comfortable ride.

Re: How many members are VW guys
I'll likely never own one, but I do think they're cool looking cars. We have a fairly large club here in the upstate of SC and their group usually has a really good showing at the small local shows. Quite a few of the cars are "patina" or "rat rods" but look cool as hell.
