Can only fill new tank halfway

I had to replace the 16 gallon tank on my 87 for the 2nd time in 5 years. Ever since the install I can't get fuel in the tank past 8 gallons! I have double checked the filler neck and vent hose for any kinks or twists. Everything seems good.

This happens at any gas station. The old tank never had this issue. I have tried filling it slowly, nozzle at various angles. Nothing! What gives!?

Yes, on the sending unit the vent hose is significantly smaller than the supply/return piping.

As for the gauge that is a good question. Anyway to test this? I think the only way to know for sure is to fill the tank, pop the filler neck off, and stick a piece of wood or something in the tank to confirm if it is full or not.

Can you get to the sending unit easily to remove it easily? A multimeter can tell you if the sending unit is bad. On mine it was a 90ohm sending unit and should read 0 to 90 (full), mine was reading 20 to 110.

Re: Can only fill new tank halfway

If you have the aux. tank, run it dry, swap to the other tank to get to a gas station and then see how much it takes to fill.
