Changing rearend gears to posi

Ok guys, hope somebody can help me. I have two 12 bolt rearends, one from a 1964 4x4, and one from a 72 c10. The c10 is a 5 lug rearend and the other one is a posi rearend. I want to change the whole gear housing from the 64 rearend to the 72 rearend, but the 64 rearend is not turning at all. I am thinking it may be due to the fact that this rearend is been without use for more than a few years. Any ideas as to what I can do to make it turn?

Also, how do post pics from an ipad?

Appreciate your help.

Does it still have the brake drums on it? If so take those off and see if that helps.

Take the diff cover off to see what is stop the axles from turning.

To post pic from Ipad there is a mobile photobucket app you can use.

I believe I found the problem, the passenger axle is shut and won't move at all. The other side tries to move, but that one won't move a bit. I guess I'll try some WD-40 and try to force it to move.

Question Re: Changing rearend gears to posi

Just found out my 64 Posi gears are 17 spline. My 72 rearend has 30 spline axles. I want to use the Posi gears on the 72 rearend, but the 30 spline axles won't fit. What are my options here?

Should I get a machine shop to redrill my 17 spline axles to 5 lugs, or are there 5 lug 17 axles from other 12 bolt rearends that interchange?

Should I consider other options? Thanks guys.

Re: Changing rearend gears to posi

a long time ago I tried getting 6 lug axles redrilled for five lug.
the center locater has to be turned down (thinking either 1/8" or 1/4")its larger than the 6 lugger.
after turning the center down a stud hole or two intersected with the 5 lug pattern.
my machine shop wouldnt fill the holes and redrill them for liability reasons. others might do it I was told too send them too moser but that was more than I wanted too spend and would've almost came close too the same price as new axles.

you might be better off selling what you have and getting excatly what you need(I should take my own advice) other than that I'm sure you could buy the axles that you need

Re: Changing rearend gears to posi

Hey, thanks for the reply, that's good info. I may have to forget about this Posi unit and install the 72 open gear rearend. Is 3:73 gears too so it isn't so bad, really wanted the Posi though.
