Re: Heavy heavy chevy, 3500HD 10 lug!

I have thought about getting into towing and I would definitely get one of them 3500HDs if I did. One day I would like to get a 69 or 70 C30 wrecker because they looks so cool and maybe put a wheel lift bed on it.

That would be cool, allthough the frame would have to be signifigantly reinforced if not replaced, regular 1 ton trucks have a really bad habbit of winding up tweaked if used as a wrecker. Even the HD's with out the frame reinforcing plates had that issue.

Yeah, I doubt I will ever build that truck though. I wonder how hard it would be to put the old cab on a newer frame?

you would be better off building a new frame from scratch, the new frames are over a foot wider than the old. It was so they could put the fuel tank between the frame rails.

If I was going to build one out of a 67-72, id get a 1/2 ton, cut the frame off behind the cab, cut the lower flange off the frame up to where it curves below the floor boards, then build a new frame out of 3"x7" 3/16" box tube, then box the front portion of the frame, and build custom cross members.

This would probably be the easiest route, and would allow you to build a nice 4 link for the rear with air ride. Also if you could find a good C/30 front suspension, it wouldnt be too hard to upgrade it with air ride as well.

you are talking about a pretty involved job, I know if you had a shop do it you would be looking at 4-5 grand if you supplied the truck

Thanks for the info. That does sound like the easiest route if I ever do build one.

It would be a very cool truck, I almost did it with my 72, but it just wasnt going to work out for what I needed the truck to do. so now it is getting converted to a 4x4 and im going to use it to pull people out with.
