Took the Plunge
Hi guys, just thougth I'd throw up a quick thread to introduce my project. I've been shopping 67-72 Suburbans for about 6 months and finally took the plunge a couple weeks ago with this one...
https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=ca209...X.Photos&sff=1 I've got a MGB road racing car that I run with a vintage racing organization and figured I need a vintage tow rig to go with it. This one is a 1970 C10 2WD ex ambulance out of Texas with a later model 350 crate motor in it but otherwise is fairly stock. Future plans include disc brake upgrade, better wheel/tire combo, refresh of the springs/shocks, and then either an LS or DMAX swap. I'm working on the racecar right now trying to get it in to paint for the winter but will probably tear into the Suburban in a month or two and start a build thread. I'm still reading the archives on this board and finding lots of good info. Any tips on disc brake swaps and powertrain swaps are more than welcome though. |

What do you need a build thread for, that one looks done.

Re: Took the Plunge
Very nice! I've always loved the suede look with chromies and whitewalls!
The easiest way to get discs (in the front) that I know of is to find a square body parts truck ('73-'87), and just swap over the whole suspension. It'll require changing the spring mounts on the rear end to the trailing arm mounts, and drilling a couple new holes up front for the new cross member. The whole cross member just drops out of the donor truck, and slides up into the burb! |

Re: Took the Plunge
I like the look of the truck and don't want to change too much but for wheels I am thinking American Racing kidney beans in 20" diameter (see attached). The stance is pretty good but I think it was lowered by torching the springs because it's hitting the bump stops fairly often. I figured it's best to pick up one of the disc brake conversion kits that will get me discs, a 2" drop spindle and 5 lug conversion all in one shot. In the rear I may start off with springs then switch to bags a little later after I get the powertrain sorted out.
Do you guys have any particular vendors you recommend? I've found all the big names through the advertising on the site, just gotta decide who to spend my dollars with now. |

Re: Took the Plunge
Good to see another 3 door "ambulance" being saved. These vehicles faithfully served many rescue squads as an affordable alternative to the "custom" raised roof offerings that were available at the time. Though cramped to work out of in the back they were far better than the station wagons that many replaced. The biggest things that I can remember while working out of them was aside from the typical electrical issues owners still face today on a quiet night you could almost hear them rust while sitting on the bay floor. Good luck on your project.

Re: Took the Plunge
Nice Burb, I am right over the mountain in Greeneville, TN. When it gets warm, we ought to get together for a show or cruise. People would be freaked out with a couple old suburbans rolling through.

Re: Took the Plunge
Nice to see another Burb here in the Carolina's. Be sure to put June 8th on your calendar. The Hot Rod Power Tour ends here in Charlotte on the 7th and we are having a big forum get together in Mooresville on the 8th. Tons of 67-72 trucks... And more!

Re: Took the Plunge
I'm in for a few shows and cruises this summer. I'm about to pull the trigger on a disc brake swap, proper lowering kit (it's got cut springs right now), and upgrading the wheel/tire combo. Can't wait to start the transformation to getting it more like I want.
