Suspension questions
Do any members of this forum know of anyone who has moved the front shocks from outside the spring to inside the spring or if it is possible? Lokks like it is to me. It seems like doing this would correct the angle of the stock method... Does anyone know of quality, geometry correcting upper and lower A-arms for our trucks? (63-66) And my last question... I have seen photos of sway bars on our trucks that have bushings with grease fittings on them. Anyone know who makes those? Thanks in advance..

Re: Suspension questions
Not sure about the shocks but I would like to know this too but here's a link about greasable sway bar bushings.
http://www.google.com/shopping/produ...ed=0CFUQ8wIwAA As far as getting more caster on your truck, you could always do what your neighbor Steve B. on his 61 Pontiac wagon. He just cut the upper A arms and moved the ball joint 2" forward. I do know someone either here or on the HAMB site made their own tublar A arms and did post pictures & instructions as to how they did it. I'm sure I saved the link but I'm not on my home computer, I'm currently in Phoenix with family. |

Re: Suspension questions
Cool Beans!
Those are the bushings I couldn't find.... I have have known Steve since high school... I installed a sway bar on my 66 and it helped but it still drives like and old truck. My 97 rides like I'm on a cloud on the freeway compared to the 66 beating my kidneys to death. Comparing cornering between the 66 and 97 shows they are worlds apart in performance. I have toyed with the idea of grafting a late model front clip onto a 63-66 frame but I don't want to get that deep into it. I have the front suspension off a customers truck and see, maybe for the first time, that the shock location is less than effective. I went to see some A-arms that a guy had on C/L and they were pretty cheesy... Maybe I just need to play around with this and see what I can come up with on my own. I would rather buy something than spend days building something...

Re: Suspension questions
Here's the thread on the dimpling the LCA shaft for more castor.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=501241 CPP's tubular arms correct the suspension geometry and have good reviews. They're probably the most economical arms too. Uppers- http://www.classicperform.com/Store/...TCA-UKB480.htm Lowers- http://www.classicperform.com/Store/...TCA-LKB481.htm If you're into making the truck handle better then the "Make it Handle" thread in the Suspension forum will be of interest to you. LOTS of info on improving suspension geometry, shock mount locations, sway bar options, how to tune the suspension, better than stock alignment settings, etc. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=419251

Re: Suspension questions
Can anyone tell me who might make bolt in static coil over suspension parts?
I talked to a guy in California that sells a kit but he won't sell partial kits, it's all or nothing with this company so I guess I need to find someone who will sell me what I want/need. What I need is a coil over bolt in front suspension consisting of the cross member, control arms and coil over shocks and hardware. I already have brand new stuff like a steering box and associated steering linkage and also have the spindles and brakes etc.. etc... I am not converting to rack and pinion and don't want to since all of the stuff I have is new....... Tried CPP and a few other I have found doing internet searches but I am turning up nothing. Any ideas out there??

In my case I do not want a dropmember as I am not drasticly lowering the truck. Their website doesn't show what I am looking for but I suppose I could go by and see what else they offer.

Re: Suspension questions
went to the porterbuilt site... found a posting called sneak peak DM mild coil-over.. looks like it could work but it has been in "testing" stage apparently and for quite a while...
I would like to get something going for my 63 quarter mile truck.

Re: Suspension questions
Hey thanks for the link.
Those arms are for bags. I am not running bags on my race truck or they would be on my "to buy" list. I may consider them for my wifes 63 build.

Re: Suspension questions

Just though I should reiterate what it is I am looking for regarding my Pro-street truck. I want to put a static coil-over front suspension on my 63. I thought about using the stock cross member but realized it will be a real fabrication chore to do this. I also want to clean up the geometry, if possible, while I make the change. I am not considering air-springs for this build. The frame is sitting, ready for me to continue and I have a lot of new parts already like all new steering parts, spindles, rotors and more. So now, with the help of many other members advise, I have narrowed down my needs to a coil-over cross member, control arms for coil-over suspension and the coil-over shocks and associated parts..... With the parts mentioned here I can have the truck sitting on 4 M/T sportsman radials in a day.

Re: Suspension questions
I would talk to the guys at PorterBuilt first to see if they can help, they are right there. Or No Limit in CA.

Re: Suspension questions
Try talking to Justin at Scott's Hot Rods out of California. My dad got a bolt in crossmember with coil overs, but i think it does have some lowering in it, I can't remember. They may be able to make one for what you need. Our truck isn't done yet but it looks well made and wasn't that hard to install.

Re: Suspension questions
if it is to be a drag truck why not go with a straight front axle?

The unit you have pictured does not have truck spindles. I have the front suspension (stock ctrl arms and cross member) and all new hardware. IF I do anything I want to use as much of what I have allready. This coil-over idea of mine is an after thought and I am trying to see what is out there and 90% of what I have found so far is for the lowering crowd. The truck sits, as it is now, on stock suspension I mentioned with the only mods being lowering springs and spindles. I did go back to Porterbuilt and Dave was nice enough to spend nearly an hour showing me several routes I could take on this truck. I am still looking around to see what is available but I may have no choice but to go with ctrl-arms and shock relocation to get the action I want from the front suspension. Quote:
Oh, and another goal on this truck is to have it ready for the Hot Rod Power Tour in June.......
