I scored a set of headers on ebay - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I won the bid for a set of new Hedman headers for 76 bucks plus 17 shipping the other day.1 3/4 primaries and 3 in. collectors which matches my exhaust,complete with gaskets,bolts,collectors.

I'll probably just go to the muffler shop and have them installed but I figure I better make sure all the manifold bolts are free so as to not risk a broken bolt.Near as I can tell,all but one are near frozen in the heads.Any tricks to freeing these rascals up?

I was also wondering if I should spring for those dead soft gaskets and locking header bolts,looks to me like they would cost almost as much as the headers.

My engine is an original big block with 781 heads.

On the bolts try and get some Liquid Wrench in there to help free it out If that doesn't help try a vice grip on it to loosen it up.

I would spend the money and get the gaskets and bolts. I've got the bolts and nver have had a leak since. Before that I had them near the back of the block.

Well I want to know what you mean by, probably go to the muffler shop and have them installed. You know other folks are not supposed to touch your truck. What's wrong with you anyway?? You ain't been drinking again, have you??

headers are actually a pretty simple install. and then, once you've inistalled them... you have to do this ritual that all of us have done at least once... driving to the mufflker shop OPEN HEADERED!!!

lotsa fun, and 99% of the time, totally legal.

HeHe,well Mike,I've not been drinking all that bad,at least not as much as I would if I had more time and money.Of course I do have to admit I've been overserved a time or two in the last little while,but that's really the bartenders fault.

I might go ahead and do the header install if I can ever get some time off.I figure the hardest part is gonna be gettin the exhaust manifold bolts off without breaking one off.Of course,I'm gettin so old and lazy,I still might farm it out,especially since I got a buddy taht owns a muffler shop.

Oh, so I see. It's not the drink, it's the old and lazy.

Best thing to do for the bolts is soak the crap out of them with some liquid wrench and let it sit overnight. Then soak them again before trying to remove them. Then, break them loose real easy, working back and forth, slowly. Once they start coming out, they shouldn't break.

quick sharp jerks will take them out better. less chance of snapping a bolt than you have of streitching one to the point it breaks, or so i've heard

If you got time just keep hosing them down with PB. I am still a big fan of liquid wrench but nothing works better than PB short of a torch. If you spray the bolts with PB a couple times a day for a couple days I guarantee you will have no problem whatsoever, and I come from rust country, like smoke wrenchin, vice grippin, nut splittin, knuckle bustin, breaker barin, impact wrenchin (only if you're real lucky), stud shearin, rust country.
