Blown Head Gasket (advise?)
Good evening. I need some guidance on a blown head gasket. I am intending on taking my truck down to the local jr.college and have the students replace the head gaskets and basic carb tune. I blew the gasket out on the freeway under load w/trailer. I knew something was wrong as the engine was limping along. Ran a bit hot but I did not roast it.
My question lies in the amount of gaskets. What is sealing the distributer? The truck stands with "82 Silverado longbed. Red over butterscotch, 15" Corvette chrome ralley rims. Kumo tires. The engine is a mystery. The cat I bought the truck from pulled the 305 replacing with a "mid 90's" 350 from a 3/4 ton truck. He pulled the fuel rails, put a cam in, air gap intake, chrome 1406 carb. Exhaust runs stock manifold through series 40 mufflers and dump close behind the rear tire. This truck runs stupid strong when well. I need to know what I'm libel to buy prior o getting there. Thank you - David |

Pull the blocks casting number, it's on the top at back passenger side of the engine by where the block bolts to the transmission. Get that and post it here and we can tell you more about the motor you have.

It has the vortec iron heads, or do they fit anything? Also has the MSD distributer. As soon as it stops snowing here in N.C. I'll pull it on the ramp and see if I can eye ball a #. Thank you for the hip tip.

You could have either vortec heads or tbi heads. Tell us do the intake bolts stick straight up and down? And there should be only 8 bolts as i recall vs the normal 12 Posted via Mobile Device

The intake bolts are at an angle. I can pull the valve cover for a part # off the head. I got the truck up on a ramp. Is the casting # near the starter area?

In the pic I was haulin brush we had cut on the property. Thought it funny that it was hiding. True camo! All it cost was some time with a chain saw. A little off center humor.
