Re: This is my sons first truck..

Ok he ordered a new windshield it will be here on Monday. So we decided to sand the cowl and the dash since we took out the old broken one. We spent a little time taken things off to get it ready for primer and paint.. when we were done tearing it down I told him even though it did fight us a little I love working on old cars and trucks. He said-- Dad i do also and I'm learning alot your the greatest teacher, thanks dad.. Makes it so worth every minute.. Here is a couple pics of him primering it then after he painted the dash.. Glass goes in tomarrow then he will get it inspected.. Gettin ready to drive it legally..

Re: This is my sons first truck..

Okay its been slow with the progress (school, scouts, and work) for the kid but still moving forward.. This was a nice weekend so between scouts and work he decided to chip out the old seamsealer in the drip rail, sand the cab top and around the back window, then we did a little metal work. He then got it all primed up. He likes the progress... but like most of us wish it was already done..

He hopes to not have it in primer very long, he wanted that ugly white with rust sanded down..Plus he just had the winshield replaced and didn't want any more problems with rust and leaks. Guess it just depends on how you put it on and what kind you use I have a 70 nova that has been in primer for about 4 years and still is okay.

Re: This is my sons first truck..

Okay its starting to get cold. So he did some more welding on the bed filled in some more holes from the mouldings then primered it before it got to dark outside. The next day it was still nice out so we cut out the 4 spots of cancer above the rear tire and weld in new metal and primed up those spots as well.. Hoping to get the chevelle out of the garage and in to storage as to get that truck in there and start in on those rockers..

Are you planning on keeping the gold/white? My personal opinion says yes! I think that scheme looks great all polished up with a set of color matched steelies and chrome hub caps! Keep up the good work. Will be following!

Re: This is my sons first truck..

c20picup,
Just seen what my son posted. oh I'm not that bad just like to know where everything is and have it clean... kids. Oh he isn't keeping the gold/white he is still wanting to go satin black with green real fire, lower it a little (our roads suck)with bigger rims, he also wants to make it a short bed, power brakes and steering. To just name a few things. But all in good time I guess

Re: This is my sons first truck..

Okay the boy has got tired of unhooking the battery every time he stopped driving it, so he got the alternator conversion kit and changed it over. His generator light in the dash is still on, so I was chasing wires and found that the last guy ran a wire (just short of a battery cable in gauge) from the back of the ignition switch the coil on the HEI and also he spliced in a yellow wire that goes to the firewall wires. So we are going to go to pic a part this weekend (if the weather hold out) and try to find a HEI plug. they want 37 bucks for one at auto parts store and have to order it. Then we will try to rewire it and see if that makes the light go out on the dash.

Re: This is my sons first truck..

I love seeing posts like this. My dad and I bought my first vehicle a 55 Chevy Truck First Series when I was 16. We had a great time with that truck. Since then him and I have restored a few old trucks. Nothing like father son time working on an old truck in the garage. Cherish the times... They are gone way too fast.

Re: This is my sons first truck..

Hey bhammer,
Your telling me. my oldest and I worked on a 69 Elcamino when she was 16 then she sold it and now has a 74 nova that she plays with.. But know she is a mommy so she has a little 4x4 suv that gets more of the drive time, but she still has that old yellow nova. Being my son was born and spent 14 years in Las Vegas he is trying to get personalized plates that say vegas for his truck, that is his nick name here. oh and know my baby girl is wanting to look for a car to work on. she is thinking Camaro

Re: This is my sons first truck..

We haven't posted in awhile. After going to summer school he is out for the summer. (He is wanting to be a dentist so he was getting a class out of the way.) He is working on some of the body work like the bed that got hit this year at school, and his driving thru a fence. The bed is all pulled out that wasn't to bad. He did sand the hood spent 8 hours sanding the old lacquer. We only had a few small dings to pull and fill put he did get it in primer. He is going to start working on the fenders next, pass side has a small dent and the bottom corner has a small rot hole in it. Drivers side small scratch from his driving true the fence. Here is a couple of pics of him working on the hood. He is hoping to have it painted by the end of summer. Power brakes, steering, front saw bar, and most of the front end rebuild/ lowering stuff also.
