Re: Installed a new wood over metal bed yesterday
The mahogany was approx. 3/4" thick and it was bolted to 3/4" pressure treated boards running under them. This gave me a total thickness of around 1 1/2". I went as thin as i felt possible to maintain the strength i wanted. You could maybe use 1/2" or 5/8" mahogany but I really didn't want to take a chance on it warping or splitting years later. Will see if I took any pictures of it as we were assembling it.

Re: Installed a new wood over metal bed yesterday
Can we please get an update and some more pictures. I am very curious about this install. I own a flooring company and would like to do this to my 72. I do not want to remove the metal bed. I want to keep it and stick wood on top. Please let us know the details and more photos.
Thanks, Chris |

Sorry, been away from the site for a while. What exactly do you want to know about? When I go to my office I can see if I have any pics from making it. Basically, I ran PT 1x2 wood left to right, through bolted the mahogany through the 1x2's, which I pre drilled so that the nuts would be flush. Set it in as an almost fully assembled piece. Quote:

Re: Installed a new wood over metal bed yesterday
A few more pics, unfortunately i didn't take as many as i probably should have while i was making it.
1. putting it together outside of the truck 2. cutting it to fit around wheel wells 3. what it looked like before-- was originally black Rhino lining, i sprayed the sides blue to match the truck paint.

Re: Installed a new wood over metal bed yesterday
I spent alot of time prettying my new wood floor up like yours. Since mine is factory I cannot do the "liftout" that you can do with yours.
A show bed in my truck rendered the "truck" function completely useless. The first time I hauled anything I was completely paranoid it would mess it up and IT DID!! Even with protective blankets down it was still obvious. Ive often considered buying a metal floor box and selling of my wood box ![]() |
