How long should it fast idle?

Im having to drive my 72 to work.I leave at 530 a.m. On cold mornings i notice it idles real fast. How long should i let it do this before i give it gas to slow down the idle?Is the fast idle for engine warm up too?

Re: How long should it fast idle?

They will idle quite high on fast idle, sometimes it seems a little high to me also. However, if your choke is working properly you will be able to barely tap the gas to move the step down the next notch on the choke cam. This way, it is still warming up the engine but not running at 3500rpms (or whatever it is) and soon enough down to curb idle.

as long as the motor stays running when you tap the throttle you can let it idle at the step down or at normal idle, i not a fan of high rpm on a cold motor..
